How To Decorate a Birthday Cake

Birthdays are always a special time for family and friends as a way to celebrate their loved ones. Parties, gifts, and games are central elements of the annual event, but birthday cake is perhaps the most central of them all. What is birthday without a cake and candles to blow out? Birthday cakes can be purchased from your local supermarket, but it is often more personal if you decorate the cake on your own.

Many people shy away from making and decorating a birthday cake for their loved one because they envision it to be a daunting task without any good results in sight. All they see is mess, chaos, and too much time they don't have however, decorating a birthday cake is really not as large or difficult of a task as it may seem.

Making the cake is the easy part, and can be accomplished either with a homemade recipe or a box cake mix. It is important to think about the number of guests that will need to be served and plan accordingly. For example, a normal box cake mix will serve approximately 25 people.

After the cakes have cooled, it is time to frost the cake. Again, homemade frosting or canned frosting can be used. If you're making a layered cake, consider adding a special filling in between the layers such as fruit, whipped cream, or an extra-thick layer of frosting. Carefully cover the tops (and sides) of the cake for a smooth finish. If you're looking for a more precise finish for your cake, you can roll out store-bought fondant to cover the entire cake as well.

Now you have a clean canvas for decorating. Begin with a plan. Decorating a birthday cake as you go along usually doesn't work well unless you have a lot of experience. Think of designs, ideas, and colors that will suit the birthday person, and create something unique for them. Make sure you're decorating frosting is stiff and properly colored. Using decorating bags and tips, you'll be able to easily pipe everything from flowers to dots on your birthday cake.

Don't forget to pipe a special message on the center of the cake before finishing the entire project off with candles. If you're looking for more challenging or creative ideas, decorating books are readily found at your local library or bookstore and will provide much helpful insight for decorating your birthday cake. Regardless of how the finish product turns out, you can be assured that your loved one will appreciate the work you put in to celebrate their birthday!
