Whenever you want to spruce up what otherwise can be a boring dinner, try for the formal look. This way you can be more creative in your presentation and the people will be more enthusiastic to eat dinner. This will be a good way to change or surprise the people at home. Since they might always expect as simple dinner, throw them a curveball. As mentioned earlier, the fan fold is one the classic and one of the most simple napkin folds out there. So if you are going with the formal dinner look, always fold the napkins in a fan style. First get out clean, white, square napkin. Remember to iron your napkins to make it more smooth and presentable. Though with the fan fold, ironing is optional.
Lay down the napkin in front of you. Fold the napkin in half crosswise. This means you fold the napkin horizontally. Make sure that the open is facing towards you and not away from you.
Then fold the napkin from right to left in the form of an accordion. Make the fold at least a half an inch to an inch thick. Keep folding the napkin until you have about two to three inches of unfolded napkin left. This will be used as a stand for the fan design.
The next step would be to fold the napkin in half; with the accordion fold facing outwards. Remember to press tightly to make sure that the folds become tighter and more fan like. The more neat your folds are throughout the whole process, the more sturdy and pleasing to the eye the final product will turn out.
Take the unfolded corners of the napkin (the ones not folded like an accordion) and tuck them in diagonally inside the most middle accordion folds. Press tightly on the folds so that the corners will be folded in securely and will not give as you open up the napkin fan.
Finally open up the fan and stand it up. Now you have beautiful and elegant standing fan folded napkin. This will make an everyday dinner table look much more special and delightful. It will be as if you brought the elegance of a fine dining restaurant into your very own dinner table and make the people in the house much happier. This will show your family that you do care about them and giving attention to the smallest details like napkins show them that you are ready to make them happy.
