- Green – Bananas with mostly green in color are not ready for eating raw yet. You have to wait for it to ripe for a few days under room temperature. You’ll fast track ripening these green bananas by wrapping them with paper while they stay in room temperature. It’s not dangerous eating these bananas, though. But expect these to be not so slimy. Instead, these will feel a bit sticky in the mouth.
- Yellow Green – Bananas with mostly yellow but with spots of green can be eaten already. Some of these can be a bit sour, though, they are not sticky when eaten unripe. Bananas that fall into this category don’t get brown spots that fast because their skin is sturdier and the fruit is firmer. You’ll have a couple of days also before these bananas will be perfectly ripe.
- Yellow – Bananas without any spots of green are considered to be perfectly ripe. These are sweet and not sour anymore. However, yellow bananas have softer skin and fruit. They get grown spots easily if they got scratched with some things. Don’t expect these bananas to stay perfectly ripe, though. Maybe tomorrow, these yellow bananas will already be overripe.
- Brown – Over ripe bananas usually have brown skin. Most people don’t like that but there are some who enjoy eating overripe bananas. If you’re among these people, then you’ll surely pick brown bananas.
- Black – These are already rotten bananas. Don’t eat these bananas because most of these are already being devoured by worms.
Other Reminders When Choosing Bananas

- Feel. Softly pinch the banana to check its firmness. It may look perfect on the outside but it maybe soft in the inside. A healthy banana is firm enough when touched and not soft.
- Blemishes. Don’t pick bananas with blemishes like holes, split skin, and other uncommon marks. These are signs that the bananas might have fallen or is infested.
- Smell. Never pick bananas with strong smell.
It’s normal for bananas to have brown or black marks because of handling and travel. You can avoid these marks by carefully handling the fruit.
Black marks will also appear if you put the bananas inside the refrigerator. Those black marks are normal and not signs of being rotten.
