What qualifies as "exotic" fruits and vegetables depends in part on where you live, and what kinds of fruits and vegetables are regularly available where you shop. It also depends on your eating habits; if you usually eat only common fruits and vegetables, you may consider many exotic that are actually available year-round in your local supermarket. Here's how to eat exotic fruits and vegetables to add some variety in your meals:

  1. Choose something new on each shopping trip. Too often we get into a rut, only buying the foods that look familiar to us. Because of this, you are missing out on so many unusual and delicious fruits and vegetables that you may never have tasted or even noticed before. Next time you go shopping, make a point to notice all of items in the fruit and vegetable, section, not just the ones you pick up on every grocery shopping trip.
  2. Do your research. Research the selection either before or after your trip. You may feel more comfortable selecting an exotic fruit or vegetable if you already know how to serve it before you go to the store. You may want to be more adventurous, choosing a unique fruit or vegetable and waiting until you get it home to figure out how to eat it. Either way, you will have to learn how to serve it if you want to use it. Otherwise you'll end up buying exotic fruits and vegetables only to have them go to waste because nobody in your household knows what to do with them.
  3. Get your kids to eat exotic fruits and vegetables. If you have kids that may shy away from more "exotic" foods, make it a game to eat all of the colors of the rainbow each day. This is especially helpful if you rarely venture outside the very common fruits and vegetables. Introducing new fruits and vegetables can be a great way to ensure that they eat a healthy diet.
  4. Use them as soon as they're ripe. You may have to do some research to determine exactly when the exotic item you chose is ripe and ready to use. Dive right in, don't let it sit on your fridge or counter for a week until you work up the courage to try it. Remember that just because it's unfamiliar doesn't mean it won't be delicious and well worth trying.
  5. Try to eat exotic fruits when they're in-season. Most exotic fruits are not grown in as large quantities as apples, bananas, or other common fruits. In part because of this, you may see varying quality fruit on the off-season. Try to sample exotic fruits while they're in-season, so that you have the best chance of getting a good example of what the fruit should be like.

There are so many exotic fruits and vegetables that you can try. It does take some effort, but you'll be surprised at the variety of fruits and vegetables you can incorporate into your food choices! Though some people categorize "exotic" fruits as those grown outside the United States, you may consider any fruit or vegetable that you don't usually eat to be "exotic."
