Frying is a popular method of cooking fish. Use these simple steps to fry fresh fish.

Fish is a relatively easy food to prepare; it is versatile, and it cooks rather quickly. It has very tender meat; consequently, correct cooking techniques are very important so that the fish will be served at its best.

The fish is done when the flesh can be easily flaked with a fork and has an opaque appearance. Avoid over handling the fish during cooking as it is very delicate and tends to flake apart very easily.

Frying is a popular method of cooking fish. This method adds crispness to the fish and it also adds fat to the lean types of fish. The fish may be dipped in an egg or milk mixture, seasoned, then coated with crumbs, cornmeal, or flour before cooking. It can then be pan fried, oven fried, or deep-fat fried. Drain the fish after frying to remove any excess fat.

Step 1:

Pan Fried Fish

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound fresh fish
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup seasoned flour or cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup cooking oil
Step 2:

Wash the fish and dry thoroughly. Mix the egg and the water and mix together in a shallow pan thoroughly. Dip the fish in the egg mixture and then in the bread crumbs and seasoned flour mixture. Place the fish in 1/4 inch of hot oil in a large skillet on the stove and cook on each side until golden brown. Serve hot and add your favorite sauce.

Step 3:

A rich tartar sauce is excellent with this fried fish. Or if you do not like tartar sauce, serve with some lemon slices on the side.

Step 4:

Oven Fried Fish

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound fresh fish
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup fine dried bread crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
Step 5:

Cut the fish into serving size pieces and into the milk. Roll the pieces of fish in the bread crumbs and place them in a greased baking pan. Sprinkle the fish with salt and pepper. Drizzle the melted butter over the fish and bake at 500 degrees until the fish flakes easily with a fork. Serve hot with your favorite tartar sauce or fresh squeezed lemon slices.

You can use any type of fish with these recipes, if you wish. This is a very easy way to have the taste of fried fish without the basting, turning and watching.
