A cheesy mash is a warm, comforting meal to make. Adults and children alike are fans of this dish and it is great served with a nice meat such as meatloaf or steak.
To begin making your cheesy mash you need to collect all the ingredients. Select a pound of your favorite cheese such as Cheddar or American for your cheesy mash. You will need at least 8 medium white potatoes for this dish. Although, you can alter the amount of ingredients depending on how many people you will be serving. You will also need about 1/4- 1/2 cup of milk, 1/4- 1/2 cup butter, and 8 ounces of sour cream. You can also add in salt and pepper and garlic too.
- First boil potatoes for approximately 30 minutes or until they are soft when pierced with a fork. Let potatoes cool and peel by hand. Or, if you prefer, you can peel potatoes with a peeler before boiling. Once boiled, cut potatoes into chunks and mash. You can either use an electric mixer or a potato masher. If you use a mixer your cheesy mash will be smooth and fluffy, however, if you use a potato masher your cheesy mash will have texture and nice potato chunks. You can prepare this to suit your own taste.
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Next start adding your butter and milk. Alternate adding each a little at a time and mashing or mixing in between each addition. Do this until they reach a desired consistency. Next add in about 1/4 cup sour cream or more depending on your taste preferences. Stir in about 8 ounces of cheese. Sprinkle your cheesy mash with salt, pepper and garlic depending on what you like.
- Now you can pour your cheesy mash into a pan. Top with the remaining 8 ounces of cheese. Bake for approximately 15-20 minutes or until the cheese has melted and become bubbly.
You can serve this as is or prepare a brown gravy to eat with it. You can also experiment with different toppings such as additional sour cream or crumbled bacon. This dish will serve about 6-8 people. Cheesy mash is a delicious dish that is easy to make and has many ways that it can be altered to suit your own taste preferences. Adding in new vegetables, such as onions, or spices can change the flavors of your cheesy mash and give it an exciting new taste. However, the basic cheesy mash with just potatoes and cheese is enjoyable just as it is too!
