There are three ways to make homemade ice cream. You can produce the dessert using the plastic bag method, the freezer method or using an ice cream maker.
To make one serving, you will need the following ingredients:
- 1/3 cup of milk (or 1/3 cup of cream)
- 5 Teaspoons of sugar
- 1/4 Teaspoon of chocolate syrup, vanilla, etc.
For the plastic bag method, you will need other materials like: lots of ice, rock salt or table salt, a towel or gloves and Ziplocs or plastic bags (1 quart sized and 1 gallon sized). This technique of making the dessert is usually great for making individual servings of ice cream.
- Mix the ingredients – milk and sugar – in a bowl.
- Add other flavors you desire to include – vanilla, chocolate, etc. You can check other recipes to make various flavored ice cream like strawberry, blueberry, chocolate chips, etc.
- Put the mixture in the quart sized Ziploc and seal it. Make sure that there is no leak.
- Put the salt and ice (preferably crushed) in the gallon sized bag. This mixture should fill up to half of the bag.
- Place the sealed Ziploc with the ice cream mixture into the other bag containing the salt and ice mixture. See to it that they never mix, or your ice cream will end up salty!
- Wrap the bag in a towel or wear gloves, then briskly shake the bags for at least 10 minutes or until the ice cream mixture starts to freeze.
- When the whole mixture is already frozen, the smaller bag finally contains ice cream and can now be removed from the bigger bag.
- Open the smaller bag and scoop the ice cream onto a plate or bowl. Enjoy!
The Freezer Method is the most time consuming among the three. In this method, you will need a refrigerator (with freezer) and a whisk.
- Repeat the first two steps of the plastic bag method.
- Chill the covered bowl in the refrigerator for an hour or two.
- Move it to the freezer and keep it there for about 30 minutes.
- Check if the edges of the mixture have started to freeze. If so, take it out of the freezer and whisk it until it is creamy again.
- Repeat step #4 three times and then let it freeze.
- Serve as soon as it is thawed, or keep it stored in the freezer.
Lastly, for the method that uses an ice cream maker, you will need an ice cream maker, which will give you specific instructions on how to use it. The procedure will depend on the type of machine you have.
If you would like to make your ice cream low fat, you can opt to use milk (low fat, if you want) instead of cream.
This can be a great choice for dessert especially after having chicken and wine as food for dinner. Instead of baking a cake, you can make ice cream for the whole family. When you have mastered how to make it, you can try to experiment on the Mexican ice cream recipe next time.
