How To Make an Over-the-Hill Cake

An Over-the-Hill cake is the perfect dessert to welcome a friend into middle age. This fun cake is much less morbid than the traditional tombstone-shaped Over-the-Hill cake.

Step 1

Ingredients and supplies:

  • 2-3 round cakes, preferably different sizes
  • Frosting in gray and green (or white frosting and food coloring)
  • Tube of gel frosting, any color
  • Pastry bag with tips
  • Green or multicolored sprinkles
  • Toy car

Step 2

Bake the cake. You'll need 2 or 3 round cakes for this Over-the-Hill cake. You'll be shaping them into a hill, so it works best if you have a few different sizes of cakes to stack on top of each other. You can bake homemade cakes, or buy the plainest cakes you can find. You can use sponge cake or regular cake in any flavor; the color doesn't matter since it will be completely coated in frosting.

Step 3

Shape the cakes. Stack the cakes directly on top of each other. If all of the cakes are the same shape, trim the edges off the top cake so that it creates a slope. You can stack these trimmed edges on the top of the cake, if you want, to create a bit more height.

Step 4

Frost the cake. First, create a sloped hill by filling in the sides of the cakes with the green frosting to make a dome-shaped cake instead of the stair-step like shape that you get when you stack the cakes on top of each other. Then frost the entire cake in the green frosting, including the sides and top. It does not need to be smooth, since the green is meant to look like grass.

Step 5

Decorate the cake. First, add a winding road in white, brown, or grey. Then add sprinkles for grass or flowers. Finally, place the toy car on the winding road, near the crest of the hill. If you want to go all-out, decorate the tree with candies, plastic trees, or other decorations. Finally, write out your birthday greeting using gel frosting.

Step 6

Enjoy! Surprise your friend with this handmade one-of-a-kind Over-the-Hill cake. If you need to transport it to the party, place it on a large tray and then stick toothpicks into the top, laying plastic wrap gently on top of the toothpicks so that it doesn't stick to the cake itself.

An Over-the-Hill birthday should be fun and playful. This great cake is the perfect way to celebrate your friend's entry into middle age.
