How To Make Broccoli Salad

Broccoli salad makes a great side dish for many meals. Because it does not need to be heated, it's a perfect potluck dish. It's also an easy way to get your kids to eat their vegetables.

Step 1

 Ingredients and supplies:

  • Broccoli, about 1 pound or 5-6 cups
  • 6 slices bacon
  • 1/4 cup red onion, chopped
  • 1 cup peas
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cider vinegar
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons roasted sunflower seeds
  • 6 ounces sharp Cheddar cheese, cut into small pieces
  • Large bowl
  • Large spoon
  • Skillet

Step 2

Prepare the broccoli. Cut out the florets, peel the skin and stems off the broccoli, and chop into small pieces. If you don't like raw broccoli, blanch it for just one minute. Then immediately plunge the bowl of broccoli into an ice water bath so it will stop cooking. It will still be firm enough to make into a salad, but it will taste more like cooked broccoli. Plus, the blanching will bring out the bright green color of the broccoli.

Step 3

Prepare the bacon. Fry the bacon until it is crisp. Then drain it, and crumble into small pieces. If you don't wish to make your own bacon, you can use store-bought bacon bits, or simply leave it out if you want to make a vegan version of this broccoli salad.

Step 4

Mix the dressing. In a large bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sugar, and vinegar. You can use vegan mayonnaise and omit the bacon if you wish to make a vegan salad. The dressing can be prepared a few days ahead, making this salad easy to make in a hurry.

Step 5

Make the salad. Mix the broccoli, bacon, and dressing, as well as the peas, red onion, and cheese. Then mix in the sunflower seeds. You can also use cashews, toasted almonds, or raisins for this salad. Some people like to wait until the salad is finished, using the sunflower seeds or nuts as a garnish for the top. Don't worry if you don't have all of these ingredients for this salad; you can leave some of them out, if you wish. This is a very forgiving recipe. Once you have mixed the ingredients together, cover and refrigerate until the salad is cool.

Step 6

Enjoy! Serve this broccoli salad cold. It should sit in the refrigerator for a few hours first; this way, the dressing will have time to soak into the broccoli. It will serve about a dozen people and is sure to please your friends and family.

This delicious broccoli salad can be served with many main dishes. You can vary the amount of ingredients, or even make substitutions or leave out certain ingredients. Other common ingredients include cherry tomatoes, black pepper, pine nuts, and bell peppers. There are many variations on the classic broccoli salad.
