Chai tea is a spiced tea that has been enjoyed for centuries in many parts of the world. This strong tea has been brewed with spices, including cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves, and is often diluted using milk and sugar. Usually consumed hot and sweet, a latte made with Chai tea combines the spiced Chai tea with steamed milk. This popular coffee house drink is easy to make at home. Here's how to make Chai tea lattes:
Ingredients and supplies:
Oregon Chai tea (or 3 teaspoons Darjeeling or black tea leaves, 8 cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, thinly sliced ginger root, 2/3 cup milk, and 6 teaspoons sugar to make your own spiced tea)
1 1/2 cups water
Approximately 1/2 cup milk
Tea strainer or fine mesh strainer
Espresso machine with steam wand (to steam milk)
Pitcher to steam milk
- Create the Chai tea mixture. Boil the water, and then add the Chai tea. Let the tea steep for at least five minutes. The longer you leave the tea in the water, the stronger your tea will be. If you do not have store bought Chai tea mix, you can approximate this flavor by combining tea leaves and cardamom pods, cinnamon, ginger root, milk, and sugar. If using loose tea leaves, use a tea strainer to remove the used leaves once the tea is finished.
- Fill the cup with tea and milk. Fill your chosen cup (of any size) just over half full with Chai tea. Then pour milk to about 1/2 inch from the top of the cup. Do not overfill, or the steamed milk will overflow your mug. You can also steam the milk prior to mixing it with the tea if you like a little milk foam on top of your Chai tea latte. If you do not have an espresso machine, heat (do not boil) the milk in a saucepan before pouring it into the tea in your mug.
- Steam the milk. Pour your mug of tea and milk into the pitcher used for steaming milk. Now, use the steam wand of your espresso machine to steam this mixture. Then return it to your mug. The steamed milk will have expanded in size, and should completely fill your mug.
- Enjoy! A chai tea latte is most often served hot, though it can also be enjoyed over ice.
This uniquely spicy yet creamy drink has been enjoyed for centuries in many parts of the world, particularly in Asia. A Chai tea latte is much creamier than plain chai tea because of the addition of steamed milk.
