How To Make Chicken Curry

Chicken curry is a traditional Indian dish that is easy to make at home, even though it involves many ingredients. These ingredients should all be found at your grocery store, although you may have to visit an ethnic foods center.

Step 1

 Ingredients and Supplies:

  • 1 pound of chicken
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 cloves
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil (can use olive oil or peanut oil)
  • 4 curry leaves
  • 1 cup chopped cilantro
  • 2 chopped tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup coconut cream
  • 4 ounces curry powder
  • 2 teaspoons crushed garlic
  • 1 teaspoons crushed ginger
  • 2 teaspoons turmeric powder
  • 3 cardamom pods
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Saucepan

Step 2

Combine the spices. Heat the oil in a saucepan on a high heat setting, and then add cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, and curry leaves. Heat them until the cloves swell and the curry leaves become very slightly burnt. Then, add the garlic paste, ginger, and onions, frying until the onions turn brown. Finally, add curry powder and turmeric powder, continuing to cook the spices until the oil separates.

Step 3

Cook the chicken. Chop the chicken into small pieces, and mix well with the spice mixture until it begins to stick to the chicken. While you can use larger pieces of chicken, you should aim for bite-size pieces, as they will cook more evenly. It may help to rinse your chicken first, so that the spices can stick to the moisture. Once the chicken pieces are coated with the spices, turn the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and cook until the meat is done. This should take ten to fifteen minutes.

Step 4

Prepare the chicken. Once the chicken is fully cooked, add chopped tomatoes and creamed coconut. If the mixture seems too thick, add a little water. Just before serving, add chopped cilantro, and mix it all together. You can also add cooked spinach to the mix, if you'd like. Cook your spinach in a separate pan while the spices and chicken are cooking, and then add it at the last minute.

Step 5

Enjoy! Serve the curry chicken warm. It can be served with bread, pasta, rice, or vegetables. Keep in mind that curry chicken has a strong flavor on its own, so try not to serve it with competing dishes.
