For a delicious English toffee cappuccino without having to run to your local coffee shop and spending a fortune, use your pantry. It is easy to get that sought-after coffee shop taste at home.
For each serving of cappuccino, you'll need freshly brewed espresso or double strong coffee (about 6 oz per serving), skim milk, one-half packet of dry instant hot cocoa mix, and English toffee - it should be crushed, and you'll need about a cup.
The first thing you want to do is to make sure you have enough bars of English toffee to taste in your cappuccino. Some find just a hint is fine, others like a little more. Start off with one-fourth cup and increase as needed. Take the English toffee, break it into coarse pieces, then place it in a food processor and pulverize until finely chopped. Set aside.
Take the freshly brewed espresso (or double strong coffee) and place in a saucepan over low heat. Slowly pour one-fourth cup of the pulverized toffee into the saucepan containing the coffee and stir until all signs of graininess have disappeared - taste as you stir and add more if needed. Once the coffee and English toffee have blended together, add a half packet of the dry instant hot cocoa mix. Stir until well blended. Take this mixture and pour it into a coffee mug of your choosing, taking care to leave room for foam on top.
Take the skim milk and heat in a microwaveable safe bowl. Heat on medium-high heat until warmed. Once you have finished, place the milk in a blender and set to whip. Whip the milk until it's foamy, then spoon it on top of your coffee drink.
For those that do not have a blender, a pot will work just fine. Take the skim milk and place it in the pot over medium high heat. With a wire whisk, immediately start whisking slowly. As the milk heats up, go faster. This will take some elbow grease toward the end. Take care to watch the mixture closely, as the foam will rise out of the pot. Once it starts to rise, you should have enough foam to top off that delicious English toffee cappuccino that you made yourself. If you have any crushed toffee left over, sprinkle some on top of the foam for flair.
Don't stop at English toffee cappuccino. With a little creativity, you may find a coffee drink for each holiday and you won't break the budget when you make it at home.
