From Sweet to Savory, Butter Can Be Enhanced with Wonderful Flavors

Cost: $1-$50

Melting butter dripping down the sides of hot rolls, a pad of butter softening on a stack of pancakes, steaming vegetables ready for that dose of sweetness . . . so, is your mouth watering yet? Butter is a wonderful addition to many foods, but there is so much more that can be added. Sweet to savory . . . following are two very easy samplings of what you can do. Then let your mind soar with other possibilities.

Sweet Spread

  1. 1 stick of butter, softened to room temperature
  2. 1 t cinnamon
  3. 2 T brown sugar

Mix cinnamon and sugar together, then blend into butter. Serve with hot yeast rolls - yum! Or, grab your favorite bread, toast it, and use this spread for a quick and easy breakfast.

Savory Spread

  1. 1 stick of butter, softened to room temperature
  2. 4 gloves of garlic, minced
  3. 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

Combine butter and garlic, then gently fold in parsley. Use this spread, when baking a whole chicken, by gently pulling the skin away from the chicken and inserting between the meat and skin. It will help to flavor and crisp up the skin. Or find a loaf of Italian bread, cut into 1/2" slices, butter one side, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, and broil until bubbly. This will go great with your favorite pasta dish.

Once you have tried either one of these, start imagining where else you can add flavor sensations!
