Lasagna is a delicious meal that's sure to please everyone! It's kid-friendly, and can even be made for a crowd. It looks complicated because of the layering, but it's actually quite easy.
Ingredients and supplies:
- Several large basil leaves
- 1/3 cup olive oil
- 1 garlic clove
- 1 can tomato sauce
- Salt, to taste
- 1 16-oz box of lasagna noodles
- 8 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 8 ounces Parmesan cheese, grated
- 8-12 ounces ricotta cheese
- Ground beef (optional)
- Cheese grater
- Large pasta pot
- Wooden spoon
- Baking dish, 10x18
- Aluminum foil
Cook the garlic. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Then warm the olive oil in a saucepan, and then add the glove of garlic. Allow it to cook for 3 to 4 minutes, but don't allow it to get too brown before removing it from the heat.
Begin the sauce. Add the tomato sauce to the oil already in the saucepan. Then crush the basil leaves and add them to the mix. If you want to add any additional Italian seasonings to the sauce, now is the time to do so. Simmer the mixture on very low heat for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Cook the pasta and meat. While the sauce is cooking, cook the box of pasta in the pasta pot with 4-5 quarts of water and a large pinch of salt. Stir occasionally to keep the noodles from sticking together. Stop when the noodles are al dente, or still slightly chewy, because they will finish cooking in your lasagna. Don't rinse the noodles once you drain the water from the pot.
If you want to add meat to your pasta, cook the ground beef now.
Assemble the lasagna. Grease the bottom of your baking dish. Then cover the bottom of the pan with lasagna noodles. Spread sauce over the noodles, and then top with a layer of each kind of cheese. If you are using ground beef, sprinkle the ground beef between the sauce and cheese layers. Repeat the layering until the pan is full. The top layer of cheese should be a thick one.
Bake the lasagna. Now cover the baking dish with aluminum foil, and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Halfway through, remove the cover so the cheese on the top can get lightly browned.
Enjoy! Once the lasagna is done cooking, let it cool for 10 minutes before serving. It will be much easier to cut once it has cooled slightly. You can also freeze it individually or in the pan, and reheat it for an easy meal. Serve with a loaf of bread and a green salad.
