Everyone wants to dazzle their friends and neighbors with a party dessert that not only tastes delicious, but that has some meaning and shows the pride they have for their country. Making elaborate desserts for parties has been an American tradition for years. Without this, gorgeous berry pie crusts with weaving and flower patterns would not have come about. Patriotic desserts don't have to take too much time and can be squeezed into a tight schedule if done right. Show your patriotism at your next get together with some of these party dessert ideas that are sure to receive many compliments and requests for execution tips.
Flag Rice Crispy Treats:
Meals are all about presentation and this idea will create buzz throughout the party. Make three batches of rice crispy treats (recipes are usually on the box of Rice Crispies cereal) and before adding the cereal to the marshmallow mixture, add several drops of red in one batch, then blue in another. Leave the third without food coloring. After the treats cool down, cut the batches into small squares and arrange them in the shape of the American flag on a rectangular dinner plate. Use a solid square of blue for the upper left corner though and stick fifty toothpicks into the blue area. To make the appearance of stars, just poke a marshmallow through each toothpick.
Red, White, and Blue Parfait:
If you are cooking for a more health conscious group, healthy desserts can still be patriotic and delicious. Try making a red, white, and blue fruit and yogurt parfait. Buy a package of honey granola, a pack of blueberries, strawberries, and a carton of vanilla yogurt. Use decorative, clear glasses to hold your dessert in also so your guests can see the thought you put into this dessert. Cut the strawberries into either quarters or halves depending on their size. Layer a quarter inch of granola, yogurt, blueberries, yogurt, strawberries, yogurt, and granola. If you really want to make it a treat, place your cut strawberries in a bowl with some sugar, corn syrup, and a dash of lemon juice and let sit for several hours before topping to create a delicious syrup.
Red Velvet Flag Cake:
Red velvet cake is an excellent way to show some pride. Prepare two circular layers of red velvet cake and when chilled and trimmed (a bubble on the top will cause layers to lean), ice in between and on the top and sides with a white icing. Garnish the cake with several cut strawberries, maraschino cherries, blueberries, and blackberries. If you want to create more excitement when the cake is cut, make the top or bottom layer out of vanilla cake mix and add some blue food coloring before baking. The look of this treat on a dessert plate will be fantastic.
