How To Make Rice Pudding

Rice pudding is an easy and inexpensive dessert, and it's great for serving a large crowd. This comfort food is also perfect for cold winter evenings. 

It's easy to make rice pudding with just a few simple ingredients, although there are many variations of items you can add to the mix.

Step 1


  • 1 cup uncooked rice
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 can evaporated milk, or 2 cups of regular milk
  • Cinnamon or nutmeg
  • Raisins (optional)
  • Vanilla extract (optional)
  • Butter (optional)


  • Pot for boiling rice
  • Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Baking dish

Step 2

Mix together the ingredients. Combine the sugar and milk in a bowl, and mix them together with a whisk. Then beat 3 eggs into the mixture. Add raisins, if you'd like to give it a little something extra. You can also add vanilla extract. Some people also add a little butter for taste, but it's not necessary.

Step 3

Cook the rice. Cook one (measured uncooked) cup of rice according to the directions on the package. Regular Minute rice works just fine for rice pudding, and it makes this recipe very fast to make.

Step 4

Make rice pudding. Next, pour the egg, sugar, and milk mixture over the cooked rice. Sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg on the top, to taste.

Step 5

 Cook the rice pudding. There are two ways to cook the rice pudding. The first is done on the stovetop. Cook the entire mixture over medium heat until it becomes thick and creamy. This should take about 15 to 20 minutes.  If you decide to bake the rice pudding, spoon the mixture into a baking dish. Now, bake uncovered in a preheated 350 degree oven until your rice pudding has turned golden brown on top. It should take about 30 minutes. Once you remove it from the oven, give it a stir.

Step 6

Storage and serving. Serve the rice pudding warm. Although it can be reheated, this will change the consistency. Some people enjoy pouring cream over the top, but it can also be served plain. It makes a great dessert or snack, and can also be eaten for breakfast. You can adjust the ingredients to make a smaller or larger batch, making it perfect to make for just one person or as dessert for a large group.
