There's a reason why Sloppy Joes are a favorite of campers and moms in a hurry. The dish is the perfect answer for when you need to make something fast, and/or that can be made with just a few ingredients, and they are inexpensive too. If you are seeking something for dinner tonight and there are no Sloppy Joe packets or cans in your cupboards, it's quite possible you have all the spices that you need to make some from scratch. But to make things even easier why not make your own mix? If you make Sloppy Joe Seasoning Mix Packets yourself you can be prepared to make dinner in a hurry later on.
If you don't happen to have the all the makings for your own seasoning mix, plan to look for these items on your next visit to the grocery store so you will be prepared in the future. You can not only save some money but you can adjust the seasonings to suit yourself or your family. Don't like green peppers or garlic? Leave them out. If you have a favored mix you have been using you might try looking at the ingredients listed on the package. Many different dry ingredients might be used for the mix, the following are some possible choices. The idea is to experiment with the ingredients until you find what you like best.
Sloppy Joe Seasoning Mix:
- 1 Tablespoon dried chopped onion or onion powder
- 1 Tablespoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon corn starch (for thickening)
- 1 teaspoon dried green pepper (may not be available in grocery store, try camping supply stores)
- 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon dried chopped garlic or garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon basil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1/4 celery seeds
After you have found out what you enjoy you'll be ready to make your mix in greater quantities. Double the amounts to make two packets, use 3 times the amount for three packets and so on. After making the mix up divide it into the appropriate number of batches and put them into individual packages. You might use foil, paper and tape, or small plastic baggies to make your packaging.
