A sloppy joe is a classic American dish served on a hamburger bun. It is difficult to eat in normal sandwich form, so it's usually served open-face, with a fork. You can use canned versions of sloppy joe sauce, like Manwich, but nothing beats homemade sloppy joes.
Ingredients and supplies:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1 garlic clove
- 1/2 sliced green pepper (optional)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- 1 can tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 onion
- Hamburger buns
- Tomatoes, lettuce, onion, or pickles (optional, as topping)
- Large skillet
Cook the meat. Place a tablespoon of oil in the pan. Place the ground beef in the pan. Then chop the onion and mince the garlic, and mix them with the meat. You can also add green pepper, if you'd like. Over medium heat, cook until the meat is browned and the onion and garlic are both fully cooked.
Make the sauce. Once the meat is browned, add the tomato sauce, and make sure it is mixed well with the meat and onions. If you want to use a crock pot, mix the meat with the tomato sauce, as well as the ingredients in the following step, and set on low heat. When you get home in the evening, you'll have a delicious meal waiting.
Add the seasonings. Now add the salt, vinegar, sugar and ketchup. You can also add any extra seasonings that you want to change the flavor of the sloppy joes. Add Tabasco sauce or cayenne pepper for an extra kick. Stir, and keep cooking on medium or medium-low until everything is hot and has mixed together. The mixture should begin to thicken, making it easier to eat once it's spooned onto the buns.
Prepare the sloppy joes. Shred the cheese. Now open a hamburger bun onto each plate. Add a little mustard on the buns, if you'd like. Then scoop some of the sloppy joe mix onto each bun. Sprinkle shredded cheese onto the top of the sloppy joes. Then you can add sliced tomatoes, pickles, onions, or lettuce, if you want. Serve with potato chips or French fries on the side.
Kids love sloppy joes because they are so messy. They're also great for casual family dinners or barbecues. It's easy to make for a crowd; just double or triple your recipe and use a bigger pot. This hearty meal tastes great, and is made in just one pan, making cleanup a breeze. You'll never make sloppy joes from a can again once you try this recipe and see how easy it is to make your own.
