Homemade Gravy is Much Easier Than You Think!
Difficulty:

Cost:

Gravy hits the spot as an accompaniment to meats, stuffing, and mashed potatoes. Homemade gravy is so much richer and filled with flavor than the envelopes of "gravy mix" found in the supermarket that once most folks get the hang of making gravy, they never go back to packaged mixes. Making gravy is really easy. All it takes is the following ingredients and easy steps to one of America's favorite comfort foods!
To make turkey gravy, you will need:
- 1 cup liquid (for the best, most flavorful gravy, use the broth that has cooked in the roaster with the bird)
- Pan drippings (see above; if necessary, add water to make a full cup)
- Browning sauce (most common is called "Kitchen Bouquet")
- 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
- Salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
- Pour pan drippings into a glass measuring cup. Skim about two tablespoons of fat from the top of this liquid and place it in a saucepan on the stove. Reserve the remaining pan drippings or liquid in the measuring cup - it will be used in another step.
- Combine fat with the two tablespoons of flour and blend with a wire whip. Stir constantly until smooth.
- Once the fat/flour combination is smooth, begin adding the reserved liquid drippings into the mixture. Continue to stir, keeping everything blended and smooth.
- Add a few drops of browning sauce to give gravy a richer color.
- Add salt and pepper as desired.
- Let gravy come to a boil and stir while boiling for one minute.
- Remove from heat and serve.
This gravy will bring out the flavors of the turkey, add flavor to the stuffing, or enrich basic mashed potatoes into a major comfort food. It is easy to make and delicious to enjoy!
