How To Roast Garlic

Garlic is known for being very nutritious. In fact, some have recommended that it should be eaten every day for optimum health. It can be eaten in a wide variety of ways, including fresh with olive oil. Roasting garlic is one of the most popular ways to eat it. Here’s how to roast garlic:

Ingredients and supplies:

  • At least one head of fresh garlic
  • Oven-safe baking dish or aluminum foil
  • Olive oil, enough to cover garlic (at least 2 teaspoons)


  1. Prepare the oven. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Although you could roast your garlic in the microwave, it is much better to roast it in the oven. You can also roast garlic along with a chicken, casserole, or another dish that is in the oven at the same time, as long as the recipe you are making does not require an extremely high temperature.
  2. Prepare the garlic. First, cut a quarter inch off the top (pointed end) of the head of garlic. Remove some of the loose papery skin from the garlic head, but do not try to peel or separate the cloves.
  3. Assemble the garlic for roasting. Place the garlic in the oven dish or on a large piece of aluminum foil. Pour olive oil generously over the garlic. If you are using the foil method, wrap the garlic well with the foil before placing it in the oven. If you are using a baking dish, it does not need to be covered.
  4. Bake the garlic. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes, or until the cloves turn soft to the touch.
  5. Remove the garlic from the oven. When the garlic is done roasting, remove it from the oven, and allow it to cool. Squeeze each clove to release the garlic, or serve whole and allow your guests to squeeze it out.
  6. Enjoy! Roasted garlic is an excellent accompaniment for bread and gorgonzola cheese, baked chicken, pasta dishes, and casseroles. Roasted garlic is great when served alone, but can also be added to soups or other dishes, like mashed potatoes. In fact, many people roast a head of garlic anytime they have a savory dish in the oven.

Roasting garlic is easy, and the flavor of roasted garlic is very versatile. Although this method works best with fresh garlic, it can also be done with already peeled cloves, like those bought in a jar from the grocery store. Simply substitute the jarred cloves of garlic for the fresh ones, and use the same method.
