How To Use Sesame Oil

Sesame oil, which is also called til oil, or gingelly oil is a vegetable oil made from sesame seeds. It is used in cooking in South India, China, Korea and Southeast Asian cuisine. It adds its own unique flavor, especially to Chinese and Korean dishes. Sesame seeds were one of the first condiments dating back thousands of years ago. They were also the first seed crop that was used for making oil. Sesame seed oil is used in cooking and some other ways also.

  • Sesame seed oil is high in anti-oxidants, one of the good fats. Add one teaspoon of cold oil to a smoothie or other shake for health benefits.
  • You can saute fish, seafood or even chicken in sesame oil for an Asian twist to your meal.
  • Indian or Chinese sesame oil is great for stir-frying. It adds a roasted, nutty taste to the food being cooked. It's especially delicious on vegetables.
  • There are several types of sesame seed oils available and they all are great in salad dressing recipes. One type of sesame oil that takes on the flavor of other ingredients is used with cold pressed oil. Darker sesame seed oils like the Indian and Chinese types add their own special flavor to recipes.
  • Perhaps the best way to used sesame oil is to drizzle it over some noodles or pasta. This is even better if the noodles are cold. The oil acts much as tomato sauce and gives its own identity to the dish.
  • Heating sesame oil causes it to lose flavor and smell. Be very careful or you can burn the oil and it then gives off a bitter taste. Use sesame oil at the end of a dishes coking as more of a flavoring than cooking oil.
  • One of the best and most common uses for sesame oil is in stir-frys. It is great in stir-fried rice and vegetables. Do not add too much though as it does not take a lot to get that nice odor and taste. Experiment with it to see how you like it. It also goes well in stir-fries with meat and vegetables.
  • Sesame oil is a great moisturizer for dry skin also. It has a nice odor. It is rich in vitamins E and B complex, and very good for your health. Sesame oil massage is great for relieving tiredness, and has soothing and tranquilizing properties. It also has sun-blocking properties.
  • Some other less known, yet very effective uses for sesame oil include swabbing a small amount on the inside of the nose to protect against airborne viruses.
  • Put on a baby's diaper area and it will protect the skin against rashes.
  • If mixed with warm water and used as a douche it is effective in controlling vaginal yeast infections.
  • Applying sesame seed oil to the air is said to darken it.
  • Massaging it into the hair and scalp is said to prevent hair loss.
  • It is also proven that it is useful in controlling blood pressure because of its high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids.
