Have you ever had a day that your will just not connect to the internet and do you want to know an easy way how to fix it? Now, in XP there are two different ways that you can do it. One is you can go down to Start, Control Panel, and click on Networking Connections. Right click on your LAN or wireless network and click Repair. Now, this will go and renew your IP Address and do all these cool stuff, fresher DNS and get you connect the back up. But if you want to learn something more and dive into command prompt, the easy way to do it in command prompt is to type ipconfig/release, enter. It will release your IP Address and now you see here there is absolutely no IP Address with there after 0.0.0.0. Then you type ipconfig/renew and so, renew your IP Address from the servers, your DHCP server or your router and get me an IP Address 192.168.1.113. Now, if you just want to see if you have a connection, you can type ipconfig with nothing in her and it will show you that same thing again, 192.168.1.113 with Default Gateway being 192.168.1.1. Now it is usually the typical default address on a Linksys router on a Belkin it is usually 192.168.2.1 and on a NETGEAR, I also believe that it is 192.168.1.1, the same as the Linksys. I am not so sure about D-Link. I think the D-Link is actually 192.168.0.1. But, of course, they are all different. Even different models are the same can have different IP Address and gateways that they use. Just to give you a little bit of a background, basically, this is how your computer talks or knows where it is on the network. Think of an IP Address is like a telephone number for your computer. So technically, when information comes from the internet into your router, that information has a key in it and that key is basically where it knows where it go into the network. So, let us say you access Google.com; so, you ping out or sending out and say, “Hey Google! I want to view your website.” So, Google sends data back and then as unique identifier or UID and the router knows that UID. So, when it gives the information back from Google to your router and your router knows to send it to that particular computer’s phone number or there IP Address. So, for example if I were to go and open up Internet Explorer right now, my router will know and when I type Google.com, I am going to send that information out to Google, Google is then going to send it back to my router with a unique identifier or UID. That UID is going to tell the computer or tell the router which computer to send the data to. So, here we go. We have the data and we have Google.com loaded on my screen. Like I said, just a little quick way to know if your network connection is working properly, you can like I said, go into the Control Panel, Network Connection, right click and click Repair or you can go on the command prompt. Most of these commands will work and Windows XP or Vista on this stuff it is a little different because you do not necessarily right click on it. You click on View Status on the Network and Sharing stuff and then you click on Diagnose and it will diagnose and try to repair or you can go on to the command prompt. Now, just as a little bit of a side note, if you do it in Vista however, when you go to all programs and I will show you how to get to command prompt, it going to be at the same place on Vista; All Programs, Accessories, you want to go on to command prompt, right click on it and you are going to run as an administrator. So, you will click, type in the administrator password if there is one if not and you are just administrator then you just get exclusive rights then it will load up as an administrator. In that way when you type ipconfig it does not say that you do not have sufficient privileges that will actually let you do. So, this has been another video --.
