New construction windows can be installed in new or existing construction. In this segment we will go over the steps to install a new construction window in frame-type construction. Installing a window with frame construction shares most of the same steps as installing an exterior entry door. Installing a window and frame construction requires just basic carpentry skills. On a scale of one to five, with five being very difficult, this project is about a two. Always ensure you have the following tools and supplies when installing a window and frame construction; a carpenter’s pencil, circular saw, hand saw, a carpenter’s level, utility knife, tape measure and safety glasses. Okay, let’s see how it’s done. First of all, test fit the new window. Center it in the rough opening. Support the window with shims placed below the horizontal jambs. Make sure the window is plum and level, and adjust the shims if necessary. Remove the window and apply a continuous bead of cock around the outside of the opening. If your window has a nailing fin, apply the cock to the back of the fin. From outside the home, insert the window into the opening and push the brick molding or nailing fin tight against the sheave. Check to see how much adjustment would be necessary to level and plum the window unit. Tack the window in place. If the window is uneven, correct it by shimming below the side jambs and then tacking it in place. On windows with nailing fins, drive two inch roofing nails into the holes of the upper corners and partway into the framing. Leave enough of the nail exposed so that you can remove it if you have problems later in the installation. Measure the diagonals of the window for square. If they are not square, adjust the shims until the window is square. Cut a length of drift edge to fit over the top of the window and then slide it between the siding and the building paper. Install the brick mold. Trim the shim’s flush with the framing by scouring the shims with the utility knife and then snapping off the excess. Apply paintable silicon cock around the entire window unit and fill the nail holes with cock. When the cock dries, paint it to match the trim on the rest of the house. Finally, install the interior window trim to cover the space between the window casing and the wall.
