Dave learns how to operate the Hatfield Transplanter, a tool that lets you plant peppers and other plants quickly and easily, and without straining your back.

[Music Playing] Dave: Hi, I am Dave Epstein welcome to Growing Wisdom I am here today with Howard Anderson we are at the one of the gardens of Johnny selected seeds Howard I took the fun thing and I gave you the harder thing I have no idea how to use this. Howard: Okay. Dave: But you have told me this is easy it is a back saver and you know folks if you are planting at home and you are always I know for me when I am planting my tomatoes and my peppers my eggplants you got to bend over, you got to plant it. This makes life a lot easier does it not? Howard: A lot easier it do. Dave: So tell me about what this is? Howard: This is called the Hatfield Transplanter and it will goes in the ground makes a hole and you drop your plant down the shaft and you pick it up and you go own to your next spot. Dave: That easy? Howard: That easy. Dave: And we have sort of two chooses about planting there are more than two but two chooses that we are going to show today. You covered the ground tell me about what you have done here? Howard: We made a raised bed with covered with weed barrier plastic this tool cool cut to the plastic and plant you could also do in just bear soil like you would in average garden. Dave: So home garden do not have to put width barrier down? Howard: No we do not. Dave: And this is good for how do the water get trough there? Howard: The water in this system is drip tape underneath the plastic. Dave: But if you do not have a drip tape at home what will you do? Howard: Either you have a perforated on top or you can run the drip tape on top of the plastic and after a few miters at each holes with a planter. Dave: Great so let us go to the task at hand so let as say we are going put this on the middle of the row all right. Howard: So it will go to the ground with the handle open like that you got to plunge it in close the handle and we are going to take the plant help down the shaft and you pick it up and you blend it. Dave: That is it. Howard: That is it. Dave: That is pretty cool you do not have to like tap it down or anything Howard: Some plants-how big your plugs is but if you can just step next to it and it is done. Dave: Wow, so the Hatfield Transplanter good for your back I got to stand up the whole time. Howard: That is right. Dave: And obviously it is very quick. Howard: Very quick we can do here in the farm, were I just plant 300 plants an hour or doing the squash plants. Dave: It is a huge labor saver as well if you have just one person planting an entire farm this can really save a lot of money. Howard: It can. Dave: So we got some work to do here right Howard: Ready to do, break out of it. Dave: All right, so plunge it in. Howard: Plunge it in Dave: Drop it in Howard: Close it. Dave: Close it. Howard: Pick it up. Dave: And up. Howard: And you are done. Dave: That is in. Open it up, plunge it. Howard: Close it. Dave: Close it and we go I am getting good at this Howard: You are.
