How To Diagnose and Treat Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia is a condition of low blood glucose. In order for our bodies to function properly, we have to have the proper balance of glucose (blood sugar), which provides us energy to perform our daily activities. Hypoglycemia takes place when the glucose level falls too low to provide that needed energy and as a result, symptoms will occur. The symptoms of hypoglycemia include; weakness, hunger, thirst, nervousness, trembling, mental fogginess, headache, blurred vision and changes in mood. These symptoms may continue or worsen until glucose levels in the blood are replenished by eating a snack or a meal.

How To Get Rid of Kidney Stones Painlessly

The pain of kidney stones has been compared to the pain of childbirth. These hard deposits can be extremely painful and hazardous to your health. Kidney stones can be caused by build-up of calcium, uric acid or other composites that develop when your kidneys process waste from your body, in the form of urine. There are ways to get rid of kidney stones painlessly. Follow these instructions and you will eventually get rid of the pain and the stone, but it may take a bit of time. If you don't want to wait, there are other natural methods to remove kidney stones fast; I recommend Joe Barton's Kidney Stone Remedy, which is all-natural and should dissolve the stones within 24 hours.

Sufferers can suffer hundreds of brief periods during the night when they stop breathing for a few seconds.

Arthritis is a word describing joint inflammation in the body, with "arth-" meaning "joint" and "-itis" meaning inflammation. The joints are the places where bones are connected together, so that they move freely, giving mobility to the body and cushioning the joints like shock absorbers to prevent wear and damage to them. Bones can be connected together with "ball and socket", "hinge", "pivot" and "saddle " joints.

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a health condition in which the liver begins to store an excessive amount of fat. While most cases of NAFLD do not progress to actual liver damage (lesions or sclerosis), the condition does place those who develop it at higher risk for developing diabetes and elevated lipid counts (which includes high cholesterol and triglycerides).

How To Understand Thyroid Goiters

A goiter simply means swelling of the thyroid gland. There are several important facts with regard to goiters, shown in the steps below.

Goiters are commonly caused by autoimmune thyroid diseases, in which case they are the results of auto-antibodies that are sent by the immune system to attack and damage the thyroid gland. The autoimmune response causes two diseases of thyroid autoimmunity:

Autoimmune hypothyroidism (under-active), also called "Hashimoto's Thyroiditis"

Autoimmune hyperthyroidism (over-active), called "Graves' Disease"

These thyroid-attacking antibodies also cause an inflammatory reaction that results in the swelling. This enlargement in the gland can be mild, causing only minor discomfort, or can become severe enough to obstruct a person's swallowing and/or breathing.

How To Use Caffeine to Treat Migraines

Caffeine gets a bad reputation for causing headaches, and it is true that one of the most common symptoms of caffeine withdrawal is a headache. However, caffeine can also be used to treat certain types of headaches - specifically migraines and tension headaches.

Understand how caffeine affects tension headaches. Tension headaches are the most common type of headache, and are often described as a constant dull pain. During a tension headache episode, blood vessels dilate, or open wider than normal. Caffeine actually helps the blood vessels to constrict, helping the headache subside. In fact, analgesics with caffeine are 40% more effective than those without in treating headaches. This explains why many people treat tension headaches with caffeine.

How To Prevent MRSA in the Workplace

MRSA is a frightening type of staph bacteria, since it is one of the "superbugs," or bacteria that cause severe infections that are resistant to traditional antibiotics.

Wash your hands! As in any setting, to prevent MRSA in the workplace, it is important to wash your hands thoroughly and effectively. Use warm water and soap, lathering up to your elbows for 30 seconds. It may sound like overkill, but it's a way to stay healthy!

Use hand sanitizer. If you are unable to wash your hands frequently, use an alcohol-based gel hand sanitizer to kill germs. It is generally a better idea to wash your hands, but if you can't get to water and soap, a hand sanitizer will work just fine.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, is an extremely drug-resistant bacterium, also known as a superbug. A form of staph, the MRSA bacteria can be spread by touching surfaces that are contaminated, and by skin-to-skin contact. MRSA causes skin infections, pneumonia, blood poisoning, and toxic shock syndrome - but there are ways to prevent MRSA!

How To Deal with a Hangover

"Come on, it's party time! The festive season is here, and you probably have already been flooded with invitations to parties. All-night-long parties are usually accompanied by lots of drinking and eating. My usual advice to you is, "Moderation is the key," but in the midst of all the fun and booze, would you still remember what I say? I doubt it.

After a night of excessive drinking and binging, you will probably wake up to a throbbing headache, dry throat, queasy stomach and weakness all over the body - all symptoms of a hangover. Now all is not lost, because if you are prepared for a hangover, you can reduce the discomfort to a minimum. Here are some tricks and tips to help you prepare:

How To Read and Understand Medical Blood Lab Test Results

Ask for copies of your blood lab reports (results). If you have blood tests done, request copies of the results from your doctor’s office or from the blood laboratory that performed the tests. If you live in the USA, you are entitled to copies of results from blood tests that have been ordered for you. The law that obliges medical entities to provide you copies is called the “HIPAA Law.” Once you have requested lab result copies, the office or lab has 30 days (according to this law) to comply with your request.

Once you receive copies, it is a good idea to make a notebook or file for your lab results that you can keep as back-up files, in case you decide to see a new doctor (second opinion) or change doctors, without informing your previous doctor that you are doing so. Having your own copies is also helpful, in case you wish to post your results to a physician forum or patient forum on the Internet for further comment on them.

How To Drift into Sleep if You're Suffering from Sleeplessness or Insomnia

Sleep techniques, such as progressive relaxation and deep breathing, can help relax your mind and body enough so that you can drift into sleep. In fact, there are far more effective and natural ways to deal with insomnia than your average sleeping pill. However, today I will explain a simple and basic sleep technique that you will be able to follow with ease.

It’s simply impossible to will the mind and body to sleep as you may have already tried. By focusing on merely relaxing the body and mind, you can gear yourself for sleep. When the conscious mind drifts and the sub-conscious takes over, you are in a prime state for sleep. This exercise will help you do just that.

How To Use the Power of Touch in Your Yoga Practice

When we suffer from anxiety, our minds can become scattered and our bodies riddled with tension. Yoga has the ability to pull us out of a state of anxiety and place us into an environment of physical and mental solitude. Practicing yoga enables us to use all of our physical senses to help pull us back to calmness. One powerful sense we can learn to apply and cultivate in our asana (pose) is touch. By shifting our attention into pressing our hands and feet to the earth and grounding our asana, we've established a stable environment that can be calming and healing.

How To Recognize Fever in Children

Signs of discomfort are often the first signs of fever. Fever is when the body's temperature rises above normal (usually varies between 35.8 and 37.4 degrees Celsius). A temperature of 40 degrees Celsius is considered high fever. This rise in temperature is a part of the body's way of attempting to kill any infectious agents in the child's system.

How To Recognize Fever in Children. Fever may vary according to the underlying cause, but some signs to look out for include:

Hot and flushed all over.

Irritability or crying.

Listless or lethargic.

Restless during the night.

Loss of appetite.

Uncontrollable shivering.

Sudden vomiting.

Whining, complaining or clinginess.

It is one thing to know why older people don't sleep as well; it is quite another to do something about it. There is no easy solution because the aging process proceeds at a different pace in different people and affects each of us differently. If you are one of the 35 million Americans who has trouble sleeping, remember that age is not the only culprit. Here are some general measures to help you get sleep, no matter how old or how young you are:

How To See the Early Signs of a Drug or Alcohol Problem

The basic guideline for judging whether a person has a problem with alcohol or other drugs, and, therefore, should seek help from a qualified addictions counselor, is this: Does my use of drugs or alcohol cause significant problems in important areas of my life, and do I continue to use the substance anyway? Here are the steps to take to figure out if you have a problem and need help.

Do I use drugs or alcohol?

Does my use cause problems in relationships, at work, legal problems, medical problems?

Do I continue to use the substance anyway, despite the problems in #2?

If my answers to #1-3 are affirmative, I need help.

The negative consequences from drug or alcohol use must consist of a pattern of behaviors, not just occurring once or twice. Here are a few examples:

How To Know If You Have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

If you have severe, chronic (ongoing) fatigue, you may have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). According to medical research and sources, CFS is characterized by its main symptom of "fatigue" not explained by an existing illness in the person experiencing it. In order for severe, chronic fatigue to be considered as a possibility, it must be experienced for at least six months, with no significant relief during any of this time period. It is also described by medical criteria (for diagnosis) as not being relieved by sleep or rest. People suffering CFS will find that sleep does not refresh them, even when they get adequate or more than adequate amounts of sleep (8 hours or more). This symptom of severe, chronic fatigue is the major, characterizing feature of CFS.

If you have joint and muscle pain, in addition to the fatigue described in step #1, you may have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
How To Know if You Have Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome

Mitral Valve Prolapse is a common heart abnormality, also called a "click murmur" and though statistics vary in regard to the number of Americans that have this disorder, one of the more commonly published statistics states that up to 1 in 5 Americans have Mitral Valve Prolapse. For most patients, this common disorder does not cause symptoms but for those in whom it does, it is referred to as "Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome" (MVPS). The symptoms this disorder commonly causes include: Chest pain, fatigue, palpitations, extra heartbeats, lightheadedness, dizziness, shortness of breath, anxiety and/or panic attacks, headaches, low exercise tolerance and mood swings.

The steps below can help you recognize if you have this syndrome. Remember that MVP is the heart condition that causes the syndrome (MVPS), but some patients have MVP and do not experience these symptoms:

How To Recognize if You Have Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal fatigue is a common syndrome caused by chronic stress and affects a large percent of the population at some point in their lives (estimates are up to 80% of Americans), but if it can be recognized, it can also be treated. While adrenal fatigue is not as serious as actual adrenal diseases and full-blown adrenal insufficiency, the symptoms can still be concerning and can also negatively affect a person's quality of life.

If you're feeling rundown and tired and seem to have a reduced tolerance for stress, the following steps can help you recognize if it is adrenal fatigue.

How To Tell if Your Partner Has Sleep Apnea

Some people call it sawing logs, but snoring is a serious medical problem that affects people of all ages. Men are more apt to suffer from snoring than women. Obese individuals are more likely to suffer from snoring as well, but even children are known to snore. Snoring also tends to increase with age; forty-five percent of people snore occasionally, while twenty-five percent snore habitually.

Occasional snoring is usually more of an annoyance to your bed partner than anything serious. When it is a habitual problem, then the person who snores will wake up tired and exhausted. Sometimes, a doctor is needed to help discover the cause and sometimes you will have to participate in a sleep study to learn more about the specifics of your problem.

How To Overcome Fear of Flying

Many of us are afraid of driving because we consider it too unsafe. That fear is considered legitimate because the high frequency of car accidents tells us there is a substantial risk to driving. But the ultra-low frequency of airplane accidents would indicate to us the risk involved in air travel is extremely minimal. And yet the fear persists, which is why fear of flying is considered a phobia - aviophobia, an irrational fear. But given that humans only developed this ability to fly within the last hundred years or so, should it come as a surprise that not all of us are comfortable traveling miles above solid ground in a metal tube?

How To Overcome Claustrophobia

Two of the most well known diagnosable fears are claustrophobia and arachnophobia. But while arachnophobia had a movie named for it, claustrophobia owes its fame solely to the simple fact that a great many people suffer from it. The phobia ranges widely in its severity; some feel a non-debilitating sense of unease, but in the most severe cases, the fear prevents people from necessary activities of life. Though you may be frightened to confront the disorder, you can most definitely overcome claustrophobia.

Understand the fear. Claustrophobia is an anxiety disorder in which a person experiences fear in confined places. Most people consider claustrophobia to be a fear of small places themselves, but many claustrophobes describe their fear as being more a result of a perceived inability to escape. This is perhaps one reason why many claustrophobes can cope in a particular room until someone closes the door.

How To Treat Bunions

Bunion... sounds friendly, right? Mildly uncivilized, perhaps, but nonetheless benign - that was the consensus of the survey I conducted among seven of my friends, none of whom had bunions or knew the definition of "bunion." If there isn't a bunion in your life, you might suppose the term refers to something non-threatening or even comical. And if you thought "bunion" sounded friendly, you might laugh out loud at the word "bunionette." But you shouldn't.

Bunions are neither uncivilized nor benign - they affect people regardless of manners or upbringing, causing significant foot pain and easily leading to arthritis and reduced mobility. Besides, they alter the appearance of an otherwise elegant foot. Here's what you need to know to bring bunion relief to a burdened foot.

How To Overcome Cocaine Addiction

Growing numbers of America's youth are succumbing to the misperception that there is a safe level of cocaine use. Many who feel the curiosity or pressure to try cocaine recreationally do not realize how rapidly their experimentation can turn into full-fledged cocaine addiction, endangering health and derailing otherwise productive lives.

If you have been using cocaine, you might be legitimately concerned that your recreational cocaine use is turning into a cocaine addiction, as so often occurs. If any of these statements could apply to you, please consider the possibility that you have developed a potentially life-threatening cocaine addiction and seek help from local drug counselors and community rehabilitation resources.

You use more cocaine than you originally planned.

You have escalated the size of planned doses.
How To Recognize Cocaine Addiction

Statistics are a funny thing. To hear that 2.8 percent of Americans age 15-64 consume cocaine, one might feel like cocaine abuse is a somewhat marginal concern. Yet half of the world's consumption of cocaine occurs in the United States - roughly 300 metric tons of it per year. A sobering statistic, made more sobering by the knowledge of what cocaine does to the human body. Whether snorted, eaten, injected or smoked, cocaine is potentially deadly, and no one can predict a fatal dose. Here are some perils of long-term, unresolved cocaine addiction and even short-term abuse in some cases.

How To Use Urine to Cure Fungus

Flush!... and down (hopefully) goes the liquid waste we produce on a daily basis (hopefully). Right down the chute! But is it really "waste," or should we regard urine more favorably after all? For those of us who are struggling to get rid of a fungal infection, is the answer not in our pharmacies, but in our urine? Are we looking for fungal relief in all the wrong places? How cool would it be if urine (available free of charge) could do the job of an over-the-counter or even prescription antifungal drug?

How To Understand Gilbert's Syndrome

If you've recently been diagnosed with Gilbert's syndrome, you might be wondering how secondary bilirubin is different from the main kind, how it might affect your life, and how to properly pronounce "Gilbert." Here's what you need to know about living with Gilbert's disease.

Who is affected? A single-digit percentage of Americans have the hereditary liver disorder known as Gilbert's syndrome. The syndrome is more common in men than women. If you have been diagnosed with Gilbert's syndrome, it means that you have an elevated amount of secondary (or unconjugated) bilirubin in your bloodstream due to reduced performance of glucoronyl transferase, an enzyme that would otherwise turn it to conjugated bilirubin. Conjugated bilirubin passes out of our body through the kidneys.

How To Remove Plantar Warts

Did you know that the same virus at the center of the current cervical cancer awareness is also responsible for plantar warts? Sounds crazy, but it's true - human papillomavirus (or HPV), albeit a different type of the virus than the cervical cancer types, is what causes those painful and ugly plantar warts to appear on the soles of our feet.

What causes plantar warts? People get warts through direct contact with HPV, of which there are many different types. The type that causes plantar warts likes to hang out in damp, warm environments - the kind that arouse your suspicion anyway, like public showers, swimming pools, locker rooms, your roommates shower mat, or communal shoes (if you're sharing shoes with people, you might want to inspect their feet first). If you walk barefoot through these areas, you could acquire plantar warts.

How To Recognize and Treat Mesothelioma

Though mesothelioma is a fairly rare cancer, several thousands of Americans are diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer each year - a rate that is expected to grow before it subsides. Mesothelioma is a cancer that develops in the mesothelium almost always as a result of exposure to asbestos.

What is the mesothelium? The mesothelium is a layer of protective tissue that surrounds a majority of the organs in the human body. When we talk about the pleurae that surround our lungs, for example, we are talking about mesothelium. The mesothelium is composed of two layers of tissue - one that tightly hugs the organ, and the other that encases (between it and the inner layer) a lubricant, which is created by the mesothelium. You may have wondered why you feel little discomfort with all of those sensitive organs rubbing and bumping in your body. Thank your mesothelium.

How To Treat Restless Legs Syndrome

Do you find yourself tossing and turning at night because of pain or uncomfortable sensations in your legs? Before blaming your mattress, consider the possibility that you are one of at least 12 million Americans suffering from a neurological disorder known as restless leg syndrome (RLS). Many experts believe that the true number of RLS sufferers is greater, due to a suspicion that the condition is often undiagnosed or attributed incorrectly to a different condition.

How can I recognize the symptoms of restless leg syndrome? Patients with restless leg syndrome describe their leg sensations in different ways - burning, crawling, tugging or tightening, among others. If you are experiencing discomfort in your legs when at rest (classically in bed, although also when seated), and the only temporary relief from the sensations is movement, then you should schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor to receive a diagnosis.

How To Treat Plantar Fasciitis

Painless walking is something that some of us take for granted. Unfortunately, many people develop a particular kind of heel inflammation known as plantar fasciitis. Those who are particularly at risk include women, the overweight, those with very little arch or too much arch of the feet, and those whose feet incur a lot of daily stress.

Many people think that plantar fasciitis is the same thing as heel spurs, but in reality, bone growth may have nothing to do with your condition. Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the fascia tissue that runs from your heel to your toes. If you suffer from plantar fasciitis, you may feel excruciating pain in your heel when you walk. Hot or swollen sensations in the heel often indicate that you have developed plantar fasciitis as well. Cruelly, plantar fasciitis often reveals itself right when you arise from your bed in the morning.

How To Beat Arthritis

It is estimated that 43 million Americans battle the debilitating effects of arthritis everyday. This has far reaching implications not only for those directly affected, but also for our nation as whole in terms of health care costs. As our population continues to age and other health issues such as obesity come into play, the number of those affected by arthritis continues to rise.

There are two major classes of arthritis. The most common is called osteoarthritis (OA) and occurs when there is a breakdown in cartilage around one or more joints in the body. The second category of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis (RA), characterized by an immune system attack on the joints in the body causing hot, painful swelling, and deformity.
