Are you brushing your teeth correctly? You might be surprised at the number of people who do not know how. We are all taught how to brush our teeth at a young age, but rarely are we taught how to brush them when we are in our forties. Perhaps it should be that way, because more and more adults do not brush their teeth correctly. Let me see if I can give you some tips to help you learn.
- Most people who brush their teeth incorrectly do so in a sawing motion. They run the bristles of their toothbrush back and forth across their teeth, like a saw. This is not the right way. When you "saw" at your teeth, you are limiting yourself in how much plaque and grime you can scrub off of them. The proper way to do it is to rotate the brush in a circular motion over each tooth. This may seem kind of strange and even difficult at times, but it is a much better way of removing plaque from your teeth.
- Another major problem most people seem to encounter when brushing their teeth is the amount of time they invest in it. I get it, you're running late for work, you don't have that much time to spend on your teeth. When you eventually find the time to brush your teeth, you must do it thoroughly. The rule of thumb is to spend fifteen to twenty seconds on each tooth. Many people are too impatient to spend this great amount of time on each tooth. You have to ensure that you get every part of each tooth. You can't do that with only five seconds a tooth.
- If you, like most people, cannot afford to put that much time and effort into brushing your teeth, there are things you can do to minimize the work. Mouthwash alone is not enough to clean your teeth, but if you rinse your mouth out with it before brushing your teeth, you will not have to brush as long. Brushing your teeth with baking soda is also an effective way to cut back on the amount of time you spend brushing.
Brushing your teeth may not seem like an important thing, but it saves you trips to the dentist and therefore, money. Learning to brush your teeth the right way will save you even more.
