When you feel (or see) a soft and sticky layer on your teeth, this is plaque. These are bacteria that form on your teeth every day. The bacteria in plaque form acids whenever we eat starchy food and drink sugary drinks. This acid is what causes tooth decay.   • Toothbrushing. Brushing your teeth twice a day is designed to reduce the risk of tooth decay. Be sure to brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at night since there is less saliva when you are asleep which means less protection for your teeth from tooth decay.
  • Flossing. There are a lot of areas between teeth that are impossible to reach with the toothbrush. To get at the dirt between teeth, use floss. Just be sure to scrape each tooth in an up and down motion and to not snap floss on your gums. Of course there are some people who can’t seem to get the hand of floss. For those people, floss holders and inter-dental brushes may help.
  • Toothpaste. The kinds of food and drinks that we take is one of the reasons why we should brush our teeth since our saliva is not enough to prevent tooth decay. If your diet is high in sugary or acidic food or you have a medical condition that means you have to take medicines that have high sugar content or that affect saliva, you need fluoride. Brushing the teeth at least twice in a day with fluoride toothpaste is important to make sure that tooth decay is prevented.
  • Mouth rinses. A lot of people now use mouth rinses. These shouldn’t replace brushing and flossing the teeth and are not recommended for children that are under the age of six. But there are different types of mouth rinses that answer different needs. There are mouth rinses that kill the bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease. Some help freshen breath and help remove dirt and debris around the teeth.

Whatever lifestyle you may have and whatever age you may be, everyday dental care is essential to maintain your dental health. Aside from these daily activities ensuring the health of your teeth and gums, regular dental visits are also needed to maintain dental health.
