With lifestyle diseases such as coronary artery disease and diabetes becoming more common nowadays, it’s only reasonable for any person to have a stronger sense of responsibility when it comes to eating a healthy diet. Heart disease is caused by an excess intake of fat that can be deposited in the blood vessels of the heart. Should these plaques of fat become too thick or rupture, it could inevitably cause a heart attack that could have terrifyingly fatal consequences.

Here are a few diet tips for people with heart ailments.

  • Eat lots of fruits and leafy vegetables. Ask any cardiologist or nutritionist and this is the first thing that they would probably tell you. Even if you don’t have a heart ailment, eating leafy vegetables is definitely a great way to rejuvenate your body with vitamins and nutrients without having to stock up on cholesterol and fat that could potentially cause the formation of bigger plaques in your heart’s blood vessels. Establishing the habit earlier should also help, should you still get heart disease later in life.
  • Limit your intake of meat. Eat healthy by making sure that most of the meats that you eat are lean. Turkey, for instance, would be a lot healthier than eating beef. Believe it or not, a pork dinner can still be a considerably healthier meal compared to a steak dinner since in pork, the fat is generally separated from the meat. In contrast, beef has fat all over!
  • Food preparation is also a very important component of eating healthy. It’s not enough that you prepare healthy meals using healthy ingredients. The cooking process should also be healthy. Even if you eat lots of peas, carrots and other good greens, you would still be not doing your heart any favors if you use inordinate amounts of butter to cook them. It would be much better if you were to blanch the vegetables in hot water or to simply steam them to make them tenderer. The same is true for meats. Never consider throwing meat in the deep fryer. This would only make the already high amount of fat in the meat go higher because of the added oil from the fryer. The best way to prepare meats would be to either sear them in a pan or cook them in an oven or pressure cooker. This technique also allows the fat to drip off.
  • Eat small healthy snacks or small meals instead of taking big meals. Most healthy people eat around five to six small meals throughout the course of the day. This approach to nutrition is a lot more physiologically sound and causes a lot less strain on the body.
  • Explore new ways to enjoy food. Salads would probably be your best friend if you’re trying to cut back on fat and cholesterol. Make sure though that the dressing isn’t a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The diet menu should consist of fat free and low-fat alternatives to mayonnaise such as vinaigrette.

It’s hard to be sick, especially if it’s a chronic condition such as heart disease. Whether you’re sick, or you’re eating healthy, it’s a lot more empowering to try and do something about improving your health through diet.
