A migraine headache is a neurological syndrome caused partly by chemical changes in the body that affect the blood vessels. During attacks, a throbbing, pulsing pain is associated with sensitivity to scent, light and sound sometimes accompanied by nausea, depression, and other symptoms. A migraine headache can be very severe and disrupt a person's routine. While a lot of people depend on clinical migraine medication, you can also prevent symptoms and cure migraine headache with simple remedies you can do at home.
- Rest or take a nap. Stress is one of the things that set off migraines. A lot of people who have migraine headaches claim that resting or sleeping in a dark, quiet room helps reduce symptoms of migraine.
- Place a cold compress over your forehead or a cool wet cloth on the back of your neck.
- Drink natural fluids. Fresh grape juice, tomato juice and carrot juice mixed with cucumber or spinach are proven to be effective in treating migraine. With regular intake, symptoms can be prevented. Chamomile tea also helps reduce symptoms.
- Take nutritional supplements regularly. Vitamins C, B3, B6, magnesium, and chromium are supplementary remedies for migraine.
Increase intake of omega-3. Studies have already proven that omega-3 fatty acids or poly-unsaturated fatty acids are beneficial to people with migraines. Increasing your intake of omega-3 can help prevent migraine attacks. You can always take omega 3 supplements, but the best sources of omega 3 fatty acids are fatty fish such as salmon, trout, herring, mackerel and sardines. Green leafy vegetables, soy and tofu, nuts, yogurt and baked goods also have omega 3 fatty acids.
- Know which foods you should eat and avoid. While some people claim they get attacks from eating cheese, chocolate, beans, pineapple, coconut, caffeine, etc. others do not feel adverse effects from any of these foods. Some people create a diet diary to identify which foods may trigger the symptoms. Do not skip meals, though, as it can trigger an attack. Eating well-balanced meals is always advised.
- Massage your face and head or have somebody do it for you. During migraine attacks, your tender muscles in the back of your head, neck and shoulders get stiff and aggravate your migraine pain. When you massage your migraine pressure points, press only lightly to moderately using the pads of your thumbs or your first two fingers. Reflexology, deep tissue massage, neuromuscular massage, craniosacral therapy and acupressure are massage techniques usually employed on people with migraine.
- Avoid getting stressed. Any form of stress and depression can trigger migraine headache and tension headache, the headaches caused by emotional stress and anxiety.
Not all home remedies may work for all people. Certain cures you apply may only increase your headache pain. It is advised to get a better understanding of your type of migraine headache, the symptoms you feel prior to attacks and the trigger factors in order to know what specific medicine or treatment you need. Certain headache types are also related to migraine headache, and it pays to know them to make sure you are not suffering from any other form of headache like ocular migraine, sinus headache and tension headache.
