Humalog insulin pens are a portable prefilled insulin pen that is used to control high blood sugar in conjunction with a longer acting insulin product. Being prefilled makes it truly portable and a convenient way to control your diabetes and not slow down your active life style.

Each pen contains enough insulin for 300 units. The Humalog Insulin Pen should not be used for low-blood sugar episodes, or if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in Humalog. Check with your physician or pharmacist for verification. Be sure to make note of the use by dates on the pens. No refrigeration needed once the pen is activated, being kept at room temperature is sufficient.

Humalog Insulin pen should be administered 15 minutes prior to a meal or immediately after.

To get started with a new pen it must be primed until you see a stream of insulin flow from the tip of the needle. Prime approximately six times. It is important to prime the pen in order to make sure the proper dosage is administered during future injections.

You along with your physician will determine the correct dosage for your needs. Your mealtime injection of Humalog will be based on what and how much you have eaten. Other contributing factors are weight, stress level, current medications, and level of physical activity.

These things affect how your body uses insulin. When you have blood sugar readings that are on target most of the time then you have achieved the correct dosage with the  Humalog injection pen. Your target goal will be determined by your physician.

  1. Once the amount of Humalog has been determined, you dial up your dose by turning the dosage dial to the correct amount (shown in the dosage window) one increment at a time. Each unit is counted off by a clicking sound.
  2. Choose your injection site. The injection site is extremely important. There should be a layer of fat under the skin such as in the stomach, buttocks, upper thigh or the waist area. Humalog should never be injected directly into a vein or muscles. Injection sites should be rotated with every injection so as not to cause tissue damage or prohibit the absorption of the insulin.
  3. Depress the injection button with the pen held firmly against the injection site you have chosen.
  4. Now you are ready to resume your activities.

Humalog injection pens are a portable convenient way to take control of your diabetes. Each Humalog injection pen contains up to 300 units of insulin. The Humalog injection pens need no refrigeration once activated. Each pen has an easy to read dosage window, along with an audible clicking sound to count the increments for dosage. The injection plunger is also easy access.

Ths is a great article. There is one thing that needs to be mentioned, after you inject yourself keep the needle in for 10-15 seconds (counting slowly) for all the insulin to escape the pen. I avoid having the excess drip of insulin this way. Have been a diabetic since 1966. And still enjoying life.
