Kidney disease is always a bummer. This condition can lead to death if not treated immediately since it screws up every internal process in the body. The only treatment would be to either get an extremely expensive kidney transplant or to be on regular dialysis that lets a machine filter the junk that your kidney fails to do. While dialysis is a safe and cost-manageable option that can lengthen your life to a certain extent, being diagnosed with the disease can really take a toll on a person mentally and emotionally as well. Normally, a person that is on dialysis will exhibit symptoms linked to depression such as hopelessness, sadness, and drastic mood shifts. Depression will come along with other undesirable effects such as reduction of appetite and decreased libido levels. If you are a kidney disease sufferer on a regular dialysis treatment and feel depressed a whole lot since you were diagnosed with the condition, then here are some tips on how you can keep your spirits high regardless of your situation.
- Turn to God. One of the most effective ways to avoid depression is to simply turn to a higher power that can provide you the strength and hope in this darkest time of your life. Regardless of your religious affiliation or preferred spiritual institution, turning to your specific God can greatly put you at ease and may eliminate the feeling of hopelessness.
- Turn to your family. You can prevent the darkness and gloom that may come over you by turning to your family. These people will stay by you no matter what. Discuss your condition and your feelings about the whole thing to them. They will understand and keep this information private should you deem it so. They will offer to even help you every step of the way by keeping your spirits high. Remember; the more you talk about it to people that really care for you, the better it will be for you mentally and emotionally.
- Accept your condition. Some people become depressed because they really can’t accept their condition for what it is. Some people can’t accept that they will have to be on dialysis and certain medication for the rest of their lives unless of course they have the resources to get a transplant. These being said, you can avoid depression by accepting that you are in this situation and that dialysis will be a big part of your life from now on. This may sound easier said than done but if you actually are able to discuss your whole condition to the people you love, you should be able to find a way to accept your situation.
- Live your life to the fullest. Depression may be caused by the idea that you will not be able to enjoy life with this disease. The reality is that you still can and are even encouraged to do so. On this note, make sure to engage in activities that make you happy. Do what you like and what makes you happy. If you are able to do stuff that make you happy, then you will forget about the bad side of your situation and will effectively avoid depression.
Depression is always a state of mind. If you condition your mind to look at your life positively regardless of whatever situation you are in, you will surely overcome and avoid depression. With enough willpower and a good positive outlook, you should be able to weather the storm and start being happy once more.
