How To Avoid Getting Migraines

Getting a migraine headache can come at the most inopportune times. You could be taking a test or driving, and the migraine would just strike out of the blue, rendering you unable to do anything but wait for it to pass. While the cause of migraines has not been verified completely, there are several theories as to when and how it starts. Mostly, migraines are caused by a change in the blood flow to the brain. Knowing this gives most of us an idea on how to reduce the frequency of the occurrence of migraine headaches. Most of these methods usually include lifestyle changes and drug therapy. Read on to find out how you can avoid triggering these Migraine attacks.

  • Exercise. At least four times a week, exercise aerobically for 20 to 30 minutes. Women are the usual victims of Migraine attacks, especially if their hormones are active. Regular and frequent exercise helps keep hormonal levels well balanced.
  • Just relax. There have been findings that too much stress increases the risk of Migraine. If your job is too stressful, be sure to take frequent and quick breaks. Regulate your stress levels by allowing yourself a moment to relax, or even giving yourself a whole day to recover from the stress of the whole week.
  • Breathe in. Proper breathing and oxygen intake has been proven to relieve headaches and migraines. Take deep breaths occasionally to ensure that proper oxygen levels reach your brain. Breathing deeply also helps you relax more.
  • Avoid food that sets off migraines. For this, you need to observe what you’ve eaten moments before your migraine headache. Usually these foods include concentrated sweets, like chocolates, milk, processed foods, aged cheese or red wine. Keep track of your food intake before your migraine attack and avoid these foods as much as you can.
  • Eat on time. Headaches usually occur when a person misses his mealtime. As much as possible, eat on time, and prevent a headache from building up. If you are always on the go, bring a pack of crackers with you, so you can munch on them and relieve your hunger for a bit. This gives you a sort of extension before your hunger turns into a full-blown headache.
  • Avoid bright light. Most people attribute sudden, bright flashes of light for their migraine attacks. When you’re going out, wear a pair of sunglasses to ward off the bright sunlight. Avoid looking at shiny surfaces and be alert for sudden light flashes.
  • Keep a regular sleep cycle. You have to wake up at almost the same time every day. This prevents you from disrupting your sleep patterns, thus avoiding an attack. Avoid getting fatigued, and be sure to get plenty of rest after a long, tiring day.

If these steps still don’t work, you should go and see a doctor. Your doctor could provide you with the proper medication to treat your headaches so they don’t become unbearable for you. Consider visiting a homeopathic or holistic practitioner as well since they will probably have a natural remedy for any type of headache.
