How To Avoid PMS

Premenstrual Syndrome, also called PMS, is often seen in women during their menstrual cycle. Some signs of PMS are lack of energy, acne, mood swings, increased appetite, cramps, and headaches. Some women experience severe symptoms of PMS. In order to avoid PMS, a woman can do a number of things before her menstrual cycle.

  • Drink plenty of water. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Stop drinking products with caffeine. This will help to avoid getting PMS.
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables, such as bananas, strawberries, and asparagus. These fruits have a lot of potassium, which having deficiency in it can cause PMS. Stay away from greasy and sugary foods. Eat six small meals a day. Eating a lot of junk food usually triggers PMS.
  • Maintain an exercise routine, such as yoga, pilates, and even walking. Do the exercise routine at least three times a week. At home, use workout videos. This is will lessen PMS symptoms or even eliminate them completely.
  • See a doctor, if mood swings are persistent. The doctor may prescribe a medication that will relieve mood swings. Some women experience mood swings during PMS that cannot be avoided with diet and exercise. They need to take a prescription medication, such as YAZ or antidepressant.
  • Maintain a skin care routine for acne. Some people tend to get acne only during their menstrual cycle, so use a gentle cleanser and acne cream daily to prevent any flare-ups from occurring. Use natural skin care products, such as tea tree oil. Use a mask and scrub also weekly to keep skin clear of acne.
  • Go to the spa and have a relaxing day. Get a massage or go into a sauna. Just relax and get pampered for the day. This will relax your mood while avoiding PMS.
  • Take non-prescription medication to relieve PMS symptoms, such as Tylenol, Excedrin, and Aleve. Also, a heating pad helps cramps as well.
  • Drink soothing tea to calm the mood. Chamomile and green tea can be taken to avoid PMS. It will also help a person sleep better at night.
  • Take supplements. Sometimes PMS can be triggered by not getting the right amount of vitamins and minerals in the body. One vitamin that should be taken is Omega-3, which can be found in flaxseed oil.
  • Sleep for at least eight hours every night. Mood swings are triggered by not getting enough sleep. Make it a habit to go to bed every night at the same time. Also, don’t eat late at night. This will cause insomnia, which will make you cranky in the morning. Take a nice relaxing bath to avoid PMS. It will ease cramps and relax the mind. A nice warm bath helps a person to sleep all through the night.
