Diabetes is a lifelong battle. It requires a lot of responsibility and dedication to help keep the diabetic person healthy. In fact, nowadays, diabetic persons are healthier than those who are not, mainly because they keep watch of what they eat, drink and do.
Many have been kept alive by the diabetes awareness, not to mention the modern technology created to help those with the disease. The clogging and the inflammation of the veins due to high blood glucose can result to the damaging of the organs. The good thing about diabetes is that the development is slow. However, one false move that may create complications can end the lifelong battle.
To avoid the complications if diabetes, follow the tips below to ensure your loved ones’ safety.
- Know more about diabetes and devote yourself in taking care of your health. Easier said than done. If you are a stubborn and irresponsible person, then this is the time to make a change. Learn the dos and don’ts about having diabetes. If you want to “live long and prosper”, then listen to your doctor or dietician because they know what is best for you. Do not self-medicate; this might lead to serious complications if you do. Eat right and drink right.
- Stop smoking. Ask your doctor for ways to stop smoking. There are many ways to stop smoking and if only you embrace the fact that smoking can do nothing good to your health, you may actually see them. Smoking can lead to kidney disease, nerve damage, heart attack and stroke.
- Control your cholesterol and high blood pressure. One sickness is enough, so eat well and exercise regularly to help regulate your blood pressure and cholesterol. Improper diet and lifestyle can lead to stroke and other life threatening diseases. Moreover, high cholesterol damage can be faster and worse when combined with diabetes.
- Do not let stress interfere with your diabetes care routine. Stress which is caused by work or family matters can affect your manner of thinking and get in the way of a proper diabetes care routine. Think of your health. Set limits and learn how to relax. If driving to the countryside will help set your mind free, then do so. Just do not make stops at donut stores along the way. There are yoga exercises that are good for relieving stress and at the same time, shed off some pounds.
- Stay up-to-date with your vaccines and booster shots. Due to high blood sugar, your immune system becomes weak. Various diseases can find their way in easily. So keep yourself protected at all times by keeping your vaccines up-to-date. Yearly flu vaccination can help you stay away from flu and other flu complications. Other vaccines like pneumonia require not only one shot but also a five-year booster if you are diabetic. You will also need to have a tetanus vaccine with its ten-year boosters.
Like every normal person, those with diabetes can still enjoy life to the fullest. To enjoy life, stay optimistic and live an active life.
