Essential oils are oils that are extracted from different types of plants. These essential oils are typically used for home remedies for simple illnesses or medical conditions and most of them are proven to be effective. Essential oils are also used in aromatherapy. These oils can help calm the nerves and make the mind relax. There are many things that you can do with essential oils. These oils are also placed under categories according to their uses.
Essential oils are categorized into notes. Notes are also described as the characteristics of the oil. There are three basic categories of essential oils. You can get to know more about these three categories below:
- Top notes. Essential oils that are quick to evaporate are categorized under top notes. These types of oils have a very fresh and light scent. The downside to oils that are under this category is that they do not last as long as the other essential oils. Essential oils under top notes have anti-viral qualities that will help in healing certain illnesses and can also be used to improve the immune system. Some of the essential oils that are under top notes are essential oils from cinnamon, eucalyptus, lime, orange, peppermint, tea tree, sage and tangerine.
- Middle notes. This is the second category for essential oils. These types of essential oils have a warm scent. The scent may not be evident at first, but the aroma will start to be evident after a few minutes or hours after application. Some of the popular essential oils in this category are chamomile, rosemary, nutmeg, pine, lavender, juniper and marjoram.
- Base notes. Base notes are the strong essential oils that can still be detected even after a day has passed. They have a rich scent that does not evaporate as quickly as the top or middle note oils. These are also considered some of the most expensive oils that are available. Examples of essential oils under the base notes category are jasmine, patchouli, rose, vanilla, clove and sandalwood.
These are the three basic categories that are used for essential oils. It is important to remember that essential oils must not be used by themselves on the skin. They are mixed with other ingredients to achieve a good balance that is safe for you and your skin. Essential oils are mixed with carrier oils. Carrier oils are the substances mixed with essential oils so that they can be used safely for the skin. These oils are also responsible for making the skin feel soft and smooth. Some examples of carrier oils are corn oil, almond oil, avocado oil and soybean oil.
These are the basic things that you need to know regarding essential oils. If you are planning on using essential oils for aromatherapy or as a home remedy, you can go to your local aromatherapy store and pick out some oils to use at home. You can even go there to mix a scent of perfume with the smells that you like.
