How To Choose the Best Antioxidant Supplements

Antioxidant tablets

Antioxidants are molecules that delay or prevent the oxidation of other chemicals. Oxidation refers to the chemical reaction between oxygen molecules and all other substances they may come in contact with, and a process that leads to cell and tissue damage. Antioxidants usually refer to the organic substances that include vitamins A, C, and E, mineral selenium, and carotenoids. These substances are popularly known as anti-aging agents, as they fight free radicals and oxidant molecules which impair cell walls, cell structures and good fats.

While they are commonly known to slow down the aging process, antioxidants have a lot of other benefits to the human body. Antioxidant fruits, for instance, which are rich in Vitamins A, C, and E, lutein, lycopene, selenium and beta-carotene are capable of protecting the heart, strengthening memory, helping digestion, stabilizing proper cholesterol, combating diabetes effects, building proteins, fighting viruses and bacteria, strengthening cell membrane and nervous system, boosting the immune system, and reducing the risk of cancer. They have other benefits as well.

With so many antioxidant supplement products in the form of tablets, capsules, gels, juice, and other beverages available in the market today, choosing the right supplement your body needs can be very confusing.

  1. Determine your purpose for taking a supplement. Remember that you can get antioxidants from fruits and vegetables and that you may not need to augment your intake of antioxidants through supplements if your diet is complete with the proper nutrients your body needs. Do you require supplements to boost your memory, nourish your skin, manage your blood sugar levels, and so on? It is essential to know what you are taking the supplement for that you can find the exact antioxidant supplement needed by your body.
  2. Never forget to check the labels. Supplemental facts are required to be displayed on the label of products, whether they are food or drugs. It should indicate proper consumption of the supplement, conditions which may arise if it is taken inappropriately, the expiration date, laboratory test results and quality guarantees, seals of approval, and so on. If any vital information is missing, forget the product.
  3. It is best to choose the trusted brand. Naturally, no product will advertise its inefficiency. With many people gearing toward natural or herbal dietary supplements for treating and preventing all sorts of illnesses, it is difficult to choose which product is reliable and safe among the wealth of choices...they all promise positive effects and yet supplements are mostly unregulated. If you know no other brands and you are contemplating purchasing an unfamiliar brand, it pays to check the manufacturer and find reviews pertaining to the product. Do not compromise your safety by purchasing an unheard-of supplement without performing sufficient verification to prove it is safe for consumption and will do what it says it will.

If you are taking any prescription medicines along with any herbal antioxidant - whether antioxidant juice or merely an antioxidant skin supplement - let your doctor know. Whatever goes on in your body is your responsibility, hence it is wise to consult with your physician prior to taking any supplemental drugs.
