Ovarian cancer happens when there is an abnormal growth of cells in the ovaries. It usually is diagnosed in women over fifty although there is a growing number of patients that are younger.
If you are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, there are several treatment options available. The key to successful treatment is to get an early diagnosis. The sooner ovarian cancer is detected, the better the chances of the patient. Here’s how to choose the best treatment for you.
- Discuss your options with your doctor. Your primary care physician may refer you to a specialist to get the best treatment possible. You may need to go to more than one doctor to get the best team on your side. You may want to go to various doctors to get different opinions. Don’t start a major procedure without getting a second opinion.
- Educate yourself. Before selecting a specific procedure. Do not undergo surgery or start any treatment unless you understand the procedure and the effects it will have on your body. Talk to different specialists, access information online and read books. You may also talk to other patients and survivors to find out what worked for them.
- Keep in mind your treatment option will depend on your personal situation. The method of treatment will depend on the extent of the cancer, your age and overall health. For example, a laparoscopy may work for you if your cancer is detected early on, whereas radiation therapy may be your choice if the cancer is more advanced.
- Consider alternative options. Visualization techniques, meditation, dietary changes and Naturopathic medicine may all be utilized to help your body in its healing process. Acupuncture and herbal medicine may also be used in conjunction with western modalities. Don’t think that you have to settle for one specific method.
- Have the proper mindset. Regardless of what treatment option you consider, your attitude about your healing process and this disease plays a major role in how your body will respond to treatment. Stay positive and don’t focus on your difficulties. Visualize your perfect health and open yourself to healing.
- Find support. Cancer can be a very depressing diagnosis and the treatment options can leave your body and spirit exhausted. Surround yourself with people who can love and support you through whatever treatment option you pick. Don’t let naysayers get you down.
- You have the final say. Keep in mind that this is your body so trust its wisdom to heal itself. You may need different modalities but listen to your instinct. Your doctors will have your best interest in mind but ultimately, it will be your choice what approach to take. If you want to consider a combination of treatments, that is your decision. There is no one right way to achieve wellness so find the one that you are comfortable with.
