Head congestion, though not usually a serious ailment, causes severe discomfort nonetheless. Some of its more acute symptoms include the following: pain around the eye sockets, ears, nose and throat; stuffy nose; and fever. It is caused by the swelling of the lining of the nasal passages and the sinuses, because of inflamed blood vessels. Head congestion may be caused by a virus or a bacteria. If you are experiencing symptoms of head congestion, here’s what you can do:
- Determine whether it is caused by virus or bacteria. If your head congestion is caused by a virus, the mucus coming from your nose will be thin and clear, and you might experience a low fever. In this case, you would likely just need to get some bed rest, plus some decongestant medication or antihistamines (see number 3).If your head congestion is caused by bacteria, on the other hand, you will experience high fever and thick mucus from your nose. In this case, it’s best that you consult with your doctor, who would likely recommend that you take antibiotics. Do be certain that you religiously take the proper dosage during the proper times.
- Drink lots of water. This is one of the most important things you should do while your body is recuperating. Drinking water will thin your congestion and would decrease any risk of dehydration. Apart from water, you should also take lots of soup.
- Try over-the-counter antihistamines and decongestants. To reduce the swelling in your nose linings and to improve airflow so you could breathe better, you could try decongestants – they come in pill form or nasal spray form. Do know that in the case of nasal sprays, you should avoid using it for more than three days; otherwise, your congestion might actually increase. Also make sure that phenylpropanolamine is not an ingredient in the decongestant you purchase, as it has been found to increase the chances of stroke. Antihistamines help relieve sneezing and runny nose. They do tend to cause drowsiness, so it’s best that you take them during the nighttime.If you still experience symptoms after three days, it’s best that you consult with your doctor so that he could recommend prescription allergy medications (as head congestion may be a symptom of allergies).
- Try steam therapy. Another remedy to clear your sinuses is steam therapy. Simply stand over a boiling pot of water, place a towel over your head, and inhale the steam. Do deep breathing over the steam for about 5 minutes.
- Stay away from possible nasal irritants. Make sure that you are confined to a clean room devoid of possible allergens (such as dust, smoke, perfumes, etc). It’s also best that you run a humidifier inside your room. You should also sleep with your head propped up by pillows, so that you could breathe more easily.
Remember, when you are suffering from head congestion, the best way is to allow your body to recuperate by giving yourself time to rest. Take about a week of proper treatment and pampering, and you should be back on your feet in no time.
