Medical services, also called health care services are a country's ability to provide its citizens health care services. A study done by the Commonwealth Fund has found that the health services of America is the most costly and of the least quality compared to the health care services by other countries (Australia, New Zealand, UK, Germany and Canada).

While it can be argued that not everyone can afford going to other countries for health care, people can always choose the medical service package for their needs and based on their budget. So how can you compare services? The following suggestions may help you on your way:

  1. Seek hospitals or centers. Take the initiative to scout for hospitals and/or health care organizations that offer a liquidation of costs of all basic health care services. Include diagnostic studies (labs, X-rays, MRIs), room cost per day, emergency medical care costs, ambulance services, health insurance services, etc.
  2. Seek advice from friends, family and your company. Your friends who are health care providers or working in hospitals as well as family members who seek consultation from certain establishments may be able to give you a crude comparison of prices. Insurance companies may also help. These companies, with regard to medical treatments have a lot of experience in dealing with health care costs. Your insurance company or your HMO may provide you with a list of budget-friendly hospitals or centers of America that support health insurance services. Take note, however, that not all hospital services are the same. Some institutions may be specializing in brain surgery, some in hospice care. It makes sense that these specializing services cost more than services of a general hospital.
  3. Seek advice from your state. Some states in America provide free services for an eligible bracket of people. Ask around if there is an existing free or sponsored service in your state.
  4. Get health care packages. Well-known health care services like medical Medicaid or Medicare of America, Inc. may offer lower-cost medical services for a group of people who fit their requirements.
  5. Go international. If you have a valid passport and the budget, consider medical tourism. This refers to a country's advertisement of medical services to attract tourists and locals to choose theirs. Some countries may provide local guides, a translator or even discounts on their services to augment with the country's medical tourism. Get a liquidation of costs. The country may be more than willing to provide them.
  6. Never compromise economy for quality. How do you compare two establishments when one hospital offers cheap but low-quality services while the other provides expensive but high-quality services? You don't. Comparing medical services doesn't only mean comparing prices. Do not forget to check out customer satisfaction rates, cost-effectiveness, up-to-date machines, or top performing doctors. On the other hand, being expensive doesn't always mean good quality. As with other matters, always research, review and clarify.

Health is wealth, it is true. But to be healthy at times, you need to be a little wealthy, too. Medical services are not supposed to be expensive but they certainly don't come cheap. Get a service that works for you, not only for your pocket but more importantly, your health as well as your family's, too.
