Nausea is often a result of motion. You might be riding in a plane, train or even a car, and you can get motion sickness. Most people will experience this due to a variety of factors, such as balance problems or a stomach upset. It can even be psycho-somatic, which means the nausea is caused by psychological factors.
Nausea and upset stomach can be treated in a variety of ways, and these can include home remedies, over-the-counter medicines and sometimes even plain willpower.
Find out the source. The first thing to do when curing your nausea and upset stomach is to find the source. These could be a result of various things, including travel, food allergies, lactose intolerance, alcohol, and even medication.
Take anti motion sickness pills. If your nausea and upset stomach are a result of motion, you might find comfort in taking Dramamine or other anti motion sickness pills. Traveling by car, train, airplane, bus or just about any means where you are subjected to acceleration and turns will usually result in nausea. Take the pills at least half an hour before you travel for best results.
Take non-prescription drugs. Some over the counter medicines can help calm down an upset stomach and prevent nausea. These include Pepto-Bismol, Mylanta and Maalox. For nausea, these include Emetrol and Nausene.
Eat crackers. Eat plain soda crackers. Eating something plain and generally tasteless will help minimize one’s nausea. This is usually due to a psychological effect. Also, don’t eat too much, as this will worsen the nausea and stomach upsets.
Drink a flat soda. Open a can of soda (whichever brand you prefer) and let it stand for a few minutes before drinking. As an alternative, you can take Alka-Seltzer in the morning to help soothe your stomach, in case your nausea is a result of food intake or alcohol.
Drink a Maalox and peppermint cocktail. Add a couple of drops of peppermint into a mixture of Maalox and distilled water (about one quart each). You can drink a few sips to soothe your stomach. You should have enough to last you throughout a day.
Eat ginger. Ginger has many medicinal properties and curing nausea and upset stomach are among these. You an either drink ginger ale, take a ginger capsule, or even eat ginger candy. You can usually find ginger-based products like teas and capsules in stores that sell natural supplements.
Avoid dairy products. Nausea and stomach upsets can sometimes be caused by dairy products, such as cheeses and milk. Some people might get the symptoms from lactose intolerance.
Use a heating pad or a hot water bag. Stomach upsets are sometimes caused by indigestion. You can apply a heating pad or a hot water bag over your stomach while lying down. This usually helps cure upset stomachs.
If nausea persists even with these remedies and over-the-counter drugs, you should consult with your doctor. This is especially necessary if you are unsure of the origin behind your nausea. You might have an underlying condition that will require medical intervention.
