A woman’s menstrual cycle usually comes every 28 to 30 days. However, there may be times that you want to delay your menstrual cycle to a time when it may be more convenient for you. The delay will happen depending on how much time in advance you have prepared for it. These aren’t sure fire ways since a woman’s body can be unpredictable at times. Give these options a shot and see if they work.
- Talk to your gynecologist. If you’re on the pill, you can manipulate your cycle. How you take the pills will depend on what type of pill you are on. Your gynecologist may even suggest you take an injectable pill so that you only have your period about four times a year. Also, it’s a good idea to have an overall assessment of your fertility and health before you decide to make changes to your menstrual cycle. If you have thyroid problems or other medical concerns, it may not be a good idea to delay your cycle.
- Take birth control pills. A doctor will prescribe the best birth control pill for you. If you are currently on the pill, keep taking the pills and omit the one-week break. Just take the 21 day pills and throw away the placebo pills. By taking two cycles of pills back to back, you’ll delay your period by a week or two.
- Consider taking norethisterone. This is a prescription-only hormone that a doctor will prescribe if you want to delay your period. Take it about three days before you expect your period. The dosage and length of time you need to take it will depend on what your doctor says. After you take norethisterone, your period will resume within three days. You must remember that this is not a birth control pill, so you must take other precautions to avoid pregnancy.
- Fill your life with stress. Nothing wrecks your monthly cycle more than stress. Late long nights, lack of sleep, worry and aggravation can all trigger a delay in your period due to adverse conditions in your body. Even emotional stress can cause your hormones to go haywire, causing you to get delayed by as much as two weeks.
- Go on a low fat diet. If you lose a lot of weight, your hormonal balance gets disrupted, causing your period to get delayed or sometimes to skip completely. However, you need to make sure that you are losing weight in a healthy manner. Crash diets don’t work and only cause long term damage to your system.
- Engage in strenuous exercise. If you suddenly train for a marathon or do a lot of hard workouts at the gym, your body will adjust. In most cases, a lot of exercise, especially if you’re usually sedentary, will affect the onset of your period. However, this is not a long-term solution since your period will eventually find a rhythm once again.
Don’t always try to delay or manipulate your menstrual cycle. It is still better to have a regular predictable cycle since this is a good indicator of fertility and overall good health. Once you have moved your period to a different week, resume taking care of yourself to avoid any long-term health risks.
Decide why you want to delay your period and determine if it is truly necessary. In most cases, the stress you put on your body may not be worth moving your period by a few days. Consider if it’s better to simply let nature run its course.
