So, the kids are coming this weekend. What is the plan of action? Remember this commonly used management training phrase, which applies just as well to your situation - "Failing to plan is planning to fail."
It's important that children keep active and maintain high levels of physical activity, so anything that falls under this category will keep the children happy and make up for the chocolate and sweets that you are likely to give them later.
Finding the right form of activity can be difficult as children can get bored and distracted by simple ball games. Desirable items such as a climbing frame, table tennis table, above ground swimming pool or trampoline would ensure that the children have fun, get fresh air and keep active and that will also keep them coming back!
Your yard and garden size will have a big impact on these items, and a large yard can be expensive too, but the kids are likely to appreciate them for many years. A suitable trampoline and enclosure that facilitates the children's growth and development can be purchased for around £200 and a table tennis table would be about the same. The climbing frame and above ground pool cost slightly more but they represent the same long-term value.
There are plenty of other things to do that don't cost money, such as going for a walk or playing a board game, but again with these activities the children may lose focus and become agitated. You can always incorporate treats into walks to keep them interested, inadvertently like a dog, and this will also make them want to continue visiting frequently. You could also sign them up to a local club or sports team, keeping them fit and creating something that you can do together on a regular basis.
Asking the children what they would like to do is another option and although their answers may not be suitable, you could compromise. You can also look for nearby attractions such as garden centers, a swimming pool, local football team, but the disadvantage of this is that the cost soon mounts up.
Keeping the children active is the most important thing to remember as it will always come back to haunt them in the long run if they don't undertake regular physical activity.
Invite your grandchildren to come over for a weekend or a few days in the summer holidays.
Stock up on sweets and chocolate.
Ensure that you find suitable things for the children to do.
Try and create a variety of activities to keep them occupied and prevent boredom.
Enjoy your time with the children and watch them have fun!
