This decade is said to be the time when the so-called baby boomers have reached the end of their prime. Half of these baby boomers are women and are most likely experiencing menopause.

If you are one of them, then you are probably experiencing the symptoms that most menopausal women experience. Other than behavioral changes, natural menopause causes women to experience physical changes that they are not used to. This includes hot flashes, burning of the tongue, increase in weight, breast tenderness, increased tension in muscles, etc. In terms of behavioral changes, menopause depression is the most common, with feelings of doom and apprehension.

Here are some common, as well as natural menopause treatments that a woman can take to facilitate relief and comfort during this crucial period in her life.

  1. During menopause, health awareness is crucial. To avoid more of the physiological symptoms, it's good to take vitamins and supplements so that the body will be better equipped to cope with the changes. Menopausal women have a tendency to overeat because of depression or to stop eating entirely. It is best to eat the right kind of food at this point and complement the healthy diet with vitamins so that you still get your daily allowance. Vitamin E (500IU) and Calcium (1,000 to 1,500 mg) daily has been proven to help with the symptoms.
  2. In the case of surgical menopause, when a woman undergoes a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) or oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries), the changes are much more rapid and sometimes much more severe. In this case, doses of estrogen and progesterone should be administered. An alternative to medicine would be a natural progesterone cream. The advantage of using progesterone in cream form is that you'll need a lower dosage because the progesterone doesn't have to be metabolized in the liver.
  3. A healthy population of bifidus or lactobacillus acidofilus is also crucial to proper digestion and processing of the vitamins or progesterone pills that you will intake. These microorganisms more commonly known as good bacteria aid in the metabolism and proper absorption of estrogen.
  4. Menopause herbal solutions have also proven effective. One in particular is the isoflavone, which is derived from the red clover plant. It is a naturally occurring plant estrogen, which according to studies provides significant relief from menopause symptoms, particularly the bothersome hot flashes. Another herbal remedy is called black cohosh. There is a dispute regarding the effectiveness of black cohosh however, especially since its effects in clinical trials is very close to that of placebo. Despite the results of studies however, many women swear that it works.
  5. In terms of hot flashes, exercise is said to be the ultimate remedy. Exercise keeps the body active and promotes the health of the heart, thereby inducing good circulation. Unlike medicinal cures, exercise "informs" the body that it needs to maintain a healthy amount of secretions, may it be hormones or enzymes that the body needs to function.

As you can see there are several ways to handle menopause, whether it be natural menopause or surgical. It may be cliché but a good diet and exercise are always the best remedies. This does not mean that you have to confine yourself to only those two. There are of course alternatives to artificial formulations, but also note that results can vary from person to person. It is still best to consult a physician to determine the best treatment to take.
