Allergy or hypersensitivity is defined as the body’s reaction to allergens. Allergens are triggering factors of abnormal bodily reactions. Allergens can be ingested, injected, or inhaled. Common allergens are as follows: medicine, pets, food, dust mites, and pollen. Often people tend to have more than one allergy if they have any. Studies also show that allergy and asthma are twin diseases because they have the same allergens. Common signs of allergies are as follows: runny nose, skin rash, and itchy eyes.

If you think you are suffering from both asthma and an allergy, you may look for an allergist to cure your disease. An allergist is a specialist in the analysis and cure of the different kinds of allergies (e.g. peanut allergy) and other diseases such as bronchial asthma, sinus infections, rashes, and hay fever.

Pruritus, allergic rhinitis, and drug allergy are different kinds of allergies. Pruritus allergy is caused by skin itching brought on by chemical irritants, and insect bites while allergic rhinitis is due to animal fur, molds and pollens. On the other hand, drug allergies can be caused by medicines such as morphine and polymyxin.

Allergy testing is administered to people who are suspected to have allergies or asthma. If you want to have an allergy or an asthma test, here are the steps that you need to follow:

  1. Visit the nearest medical center and seek the help of a doctor. If the doctor suspects that you have an allergy or asthma, he will refer you to an allergist or an immunologist.
  2. Once you are with your allergist or immunologist, you have to lay down your cards. Tell him the signs and symptoms that you have experienced. Being honest with your allergist will help him to detect your allergen faster.
  3. You may also inquire about skin tests. These kinds of tests are the cheapest, most sensitive, and fastest in generating results. Skin tests are also standard bases in diagnosing allergens. On the other hand, if you have a severe case, blood tests will suit you.
  4. After your allergist decides the kind of test to be administered to you, you have to proceed to the laboratory area.
  5. Most allergy test results are not generated within a day. Most of the results take two to three days. Be patient. Wait for your allergy test results.
  6. Once the test results are in your hands, do not try to interpret them, unless you know how. It is still safer that you let your allergist to interpret the results.
  7. If you have a positive allergy result, get ready with the treatment. Your allergist will recommend medicines. Make sure that you follow the prescriptions properly. Your allergist may also recommend the avoidance of your allergens. For instance, if you have a milk allergy, you have to avoid the intake of milk or dairy products. Acupuncture and assistance from allergy and asthma foundations may also be recommended to you.

Now that you know the steps in getting an allergy or an asthma test, you may now go to your allergist and do away with that allergy and asthma attack.
