Children learn to like and hate foods when they have actually tasted them. Their exposure to candies and fast foods dictates their minds to prefer palatability rather than nutritional content. So much so that when we cook vegetables, they most likely turn away from them.

You cannot blame your child. I am almost certain that when you were also young, you also preferred burgers and pizzas rather than vegetables or meat. I am guilty of that as well. But this does not mean that we can just lay back and allow our children to continuously refuse to eat what is in the table. Nutritious foods are essential to ensure your child's maximum development.

But I am not saying that you should force your child to swallow the food despite their protests. If you do that, you only increase their dislike to eat healthy foods. And they will tend to eat junk food in every opportunity that they will get. Here are some helpful tips to get your picky child to eat.

Start with yourself. Evaluate what kind of food is in your diet. If your children see that you love eating junk food, they will most likely imitate you. Do not give them the excuse that because you are older you are privileged to eat what you like. Discipline must come from you. Your children do what you do and not what you say.

Communicate. Your child can be too stubborn. Sometimes, they refuse to eat what you serve just because they want to get to you. You can be too overpowering in ordering them to eat the food that they do their best to say no. Or it could also be that they just do not really understand your intention. They can even think that they are being punished for forcing them to eat. Communicate through the aid of a children's storybook to explain the benefits of healthy eating or better yet rely on your own creativity.

Engage your child to assist you in the cooking process. Children feel a sense of pride whenever they are given responsibility to do adult jobs. Your child's pride would most likely excite him/her to eat the food that he/she prepared.

Provide variety in your menu. Even adults can get taste fatigue with almost the same kind of food over and over again. Your child could even hate the same kind of food that you serve every day. Ask help from free recipes in the internet, magazines etc.

Never scold your child in front of the dinner table. If your child refuses to eat, do not go on nagging about their hardheadedness. Put yourself into the shoes of your child. What if you are made to eat food that you do not like? How would you feel? Be patient and take things one at a time. Talk to your child calmly and explain why you want him/her to eat nutritious food. I normally trick my child into eating vegetables and meat whenever I tell him that if he continuously eats such, he would grow as strong as classmate so and so. Try it. Weigh him/her daily or weekly and motivate through progress.

Getting your child to eat will prove to be a daunting task every now and then. They will give you every excuse in the world just to evade eating vegetables and meat. Never give up. Soon your child will also learn to eat healthy food through your patience, perseverance and fine intentions.
