Step 1:

Strength. One of the keys to having and keeping good posture is to make sure you have the strength in your core muscles to hold yourself up correctly.  This does not mean you have to go to the gym and work out like a maniac to have strong core muscles.  Concentrate on low impact high repetition exercises that will strength your stomach muscles and lower back muscles.  Strengthening this area will create better posture.

Step 3:

Firm Mattress.  Another reason many people have bad posture is because of the mattress they sleep on at night.  Too soft a mattress can cause you back to sag and cause you to create a bad posture habit.  Make sure your mattress is firm and support your back for a more comfortable feel and it will help with your posture.

Step 4:

Shoulders.  A great way to improve your posture is to concentrate on you position your shoulders.  A common mistake many people make that causes bad posture is when they allow there shoulder to roll or slouch forward.  Doing so causes stress down your back.  Be sure you work on keeping your shoulders back which will help you stay more upright.

Having good posture can help you in so many different ways.  It certainly helps you stay away from injury, but also makes you look more confident by the way you carry yourself.

Actually, a firm mattress doesn't mean that you get a better night's sleep. The best mattress is one that offers the best support. So, both firm and softer mattresses can either be good or bad for you. If you haven't already heard abouth either memory foam or latex it's well worth checking out both of these comparatively new mattress types and they are generally acknowledged as being the best modern technology can offer.
