How To Help Someone Overcome a Bout of Depression

Depression is actually a normal response to stress at home and in the work place. The only problem is when people are unable to get out of their depressed moods and the depression begins to affect their home and work life. If you know someone who is feeling down and depressed, here are some steps to help them overcome the depression.

  • Attention. First of all, you need to show a bit of attention and understanding for the person who is tackling depression. A lot of depressed people feel that there is no one out there for them, and that they are all alone. You need to make sure that the person knows that there are people who are ready and willing to help them .at the same time, you need to make sure that you deal with him in an understanding manner. You cannot simply tell the depressed person to cheer up, or make him feel as if what he is going through is insignificant. You need to understand that during depression, the person will feel as if every little hurt is tremendous. You need to keep yourself from judging the person, and simply assuming that he is weak or too sensitive. While this may be the case sometimes, in most other instances, the depressed person is simply unable to deal and comprehend reality as is.
  • Health. Next, make sure that the person gets the food that he needs. This means that he should eat just right – not too much, and not too little. Depression can draw out the appetite from people, which can make the person weaker and generally lower his mood even more. At the same time, some people binge eat when they are depressed. This is equally unhealthy, and can create eating disorders that may aggravate the depression in time.
  • Activities. One of the best ways to ensure that the depressed person stops thinking about his problems is by giving him some strenuous physical activities to get his mind out of the rut. Try taking your friend out for a jog, or go the gym with him. Best of all, engaging in physical activities is a great way to increase the serotonin levels in the body. Serotonin is called the happy hormone, because an increase in serotonin levels usually makes people feel better about themselves.
  • Hobbies. Apart from strenuous physical activities, you should also help your friend get a hobby or an interest that he can focus on. Again, the reason why hobbies help is because they distract the depressed person from thinking too much about his problems and making mountains out of his ant hills. If he is into photography, for instance, get him to join photography clubs so that he will be required to devote some time to his hobby.

Finally, try to read up on depression, the various symptoms associated with depression, and how depression can be dealt with. Remember that depression is a complex psychological condition that can be very debilitating. If you find out that your friend has symptoms of major depression, be sure to get some help from medical personnel.
