The liver has different functions that are essential for our life. It works as the primary organ for detoxifying our body by filtering blood; aids in the breakdown of fats and production of cholesterol, storage of vitamins and minerals, and even maintenance of glucose level.
It is important to take care of our liver while it carries such workload. Though the liver cells can regenerate, it may take longer time to regain its function if we deliberately abuse it. So before any disease kicks in, here are some things you can do to improve your liver function.
- Have a healthy diet. Eating healthy foods is good for the body. This will definitely help your liver to function at its peak. Have fruits and vegetables included in your regular diet as they are very rich in nutrients. You can also include whole grains such as oats, barley and rice; high fiber beans and foods that are rich in protein. You can also help the good bacteria to proliferate by consuming yogurts that are beneficial to them. There are certain dietary supplements available in the market that is specifically made to help in the repair of the liver.
Avoid processed foods as much as possible. Preserved meats are high in saturated and even “trans” fats that are harmful once they pile up in the body. Decrease your sugar intake or remove all artificial sweeteners in your diet. Lastly, be sure to check expiry dates of left over foods before consuming them even when they are sealed.
- Stick to your ideal body weight. Know your normal range for your BMI or body mass index. Try to keep your weight within this range to avoid excess weight strain for your body. Being overweight may have the tendency for you to develop “fatty liver” which may lead to serious diseases.
- Drink water. Keep your body hydrated. Consume at least 8 glasses of water every day. Water aids the liver in its detoxification process.
- Decrease alcohol intake. Alcohol has bad long term effects to your liver. It has the tendency to intoxicate the liver and stress its metabolic functions. Decreasing alcohol intakes help the liver to recover fast.
- Medication. Take pain relievers or any medicine that are hepatotoxic only as advised by your physician. These medications have untoward reaction to your liver if taken above the normal prescribed dosage.
- Detoxification. You can undergo internal cleansing program as recommended by your physician. There are certain supplies that are available in the market that aids the detoxification process of your liver. But be sure to read and follow the directions exactly. Some of these may cause side effects but is temporary and only self limiting.
Having a healthy liver does not only help your body in its metabolic functions but it generally improves the quality of your life.
