One part of the body that many women find themselves neglecting during pregnancy without really meaning to is their teeth and gums. Often times they find themselves getting caught up with everything else that is going on that they forget all of these changes are affecting their teeth and gums as well. There are some steps that pregnant women can follow for how to keep their teeth healthy during pregnancy.

  1. The first step women should follow to keep their teeth healthy during pregnancy is to follow a regular brushing routine. Be sure to at least brush your teeth twice a day, normally once in the morning as well as once before you go to bed. For those who can manage it, you will benefit from brushing after every meal and snack. This regular brushing helps prevent build-up and will help to prevent cavities from forming.
  2. Next, pregnant women should be sure to take their prenatal vitamins. Pregnancy takes its toll on a woman's body in every aspect. Many women find that if they neglect taking their prenatal vitamins they find themselves low on certain vitamins and minerals they need to keep going during pregnancy. This can potentially weaken their teeth and make them more prone to breaking and other problems. Taking a prenatal vitamin once a day will help to prevent your teeth from becoming brittle and help keep your gums looking and feeling healthy as well.
  3. Pregnant women should also be sure to floss regularly as well. Flossing every other day helps to keep teeth looking better and prevents build up in between teeth as well. If you find that your gums are extra sensitive or bleed you should talk to your dentist to see if there are special flossing methods they recommend.

Women should always keep up with their dentist appointments during pregnancy. While there are some procedures that the dentist cannot or will not do during pregnancy, there are some procedures your dentist is still able to do. You may have to wait till you are well into your second trimester but it is better to get some things taken care of than let them go just because you are pregnant. If you have an infection in your tooth or problem like that, you do not want to just let it go to get worse because it can effect other areas of your body and then affect your pregnancy. Many women get their teeth pulled or get cavities filled while they are pregnant. Besides being able to correct problems such as cavities your dentist can give you important information and tips to follow for some extra measures pregnant women can take to ensure that their teeth stay healthy during pregnancy.
