How To Know if You Are Overweight

Being overweight not only can lower a person’s esteem, cause problems in one’s personal and profession life and be frustrating buying clothes and food, but being overweight can also bring on health problems such as osteoporosis, hypertension, some cancers and respiratory problems.

There are many ways to tell if you’re overweight: simply by looking in the mirror and seeing that your clothes don’t fit well, that your skin is sagging and your face and body are too full, or that you feel out of sorts much of the time and people around you begin to treat you differently, as if they’re afraid to be around you. And, you may find yourself overeating most of the time out of frustration, anger or loneliness. These are all tell-tale signs of overeating.

But the BMI is the best way to find out if you are overweight. Here is how it works: find out your total weight and divide it by how tall you are in inches. Once you’ve made the division, you will know if you are overweight. If you score below 18.5, then you are at a healthy weight, if you score over 25, you are overweight, and if you score more than 30 or above, then you are obese.

Another way to find out if you’re overweight is to measure your waist. Measuring your waist helps to give a good indication if you’re overweight because it checks the amount of fat that is around your organs and abdomen. When you measure your waist circumference, it helps give a clear picture if you are headed toward heart disease or diabetes. The larger the waist, the better prediction of being overweight and leading to possible health complications that can lead to several disease concerns.

Then, there is the waist-to-hip ratio measurement. This is done by measuring the waist and then measuring the hips. How this is waist-to-hip measurement is accomplished is by finding out the waist circumference and then dividing it by the hip circumference.  In this case, the smaller the number the better the outcome. The best case scenario here is the small waist combined with big hips, rather than a big waist with small hips.

If you find that you are overweight or obese, don’t panic. There are simple things you can do to free yourself from being overweight: find and then implement a daily exercise program that you can stick to such as regular walking or bicycling, cutting out snacks or sweets after dinner, cutting back on the size of your portions and most of all, making a commitment to yourself that you are a worthy person who deserves to be fit and well. And always remember, that the hardest part with any diet or exercise program, is starting!  So, don’t panic; just get going and get fit!
